Hope that helps.

a) wood pellets in winter/spring/autumn, shavings in the height of summer
b) wood pellets 210 per tonne, use about 30 kg per horse/week
shavings £5.50 a bale, use about 2 bales/3 weeks per horse
c) wood pellets - are very absorbent and easy to muck out, form a firm stable base for deep litter, very economical, but get a bit dusty and loose if bed not used much, hence the summer swap to shavings
shavings - absorbent enough, easy to skip out and on top of firm wood pellet base create lovey fluffy bed for daytime snoozing away from the sun
d) if I found a cheaper supplier I would be happy to change:)

a) what kind of bedding do you use?

Two horses are on straw, it is good quality and is included in my livery price. The third horse is on chopped rape straw to reduce dust

b) how much does it cost you?
Straw is free, effectively. The chopped straw is £6.50 per bale

c) wht are your reasonings behind buying that bedding?
Less dusty than straw, absorbant, easy to handle and locally available

d) what would make you consider changing?
A cheaper alternative that ticked all the above boxes

a) what kind of bedding do you use?
Woodchip (normally snowflake or hunters if I can get it)

b) how much does it cost you?
haven't used any in a while (horse out 24/7 now) but last winter Snowflake cost £9.50  from local merchant (luckily horse is clean so only use half bale every 4/5 days), and got some Hunters off another girl at yard for £7

c) wht are your reasonings behind buying that bedding?
Woodchip is my bedding of choice, and my mare is clean on it. Brand choice is due to deliverability vs. storage vs quality. I don't have a car so have to order from local feed merchants (within cycling distance), who will drop off if you order 8+ bales. They don't stock hunters so have to order snowflake from them. Are some places nearby that do deliveries of hunters but you have to order a lot of bales (40+) which I don't have storage for (on DIY livery), so can only get them if several of us split an order.

d) what would make you consider changing?
If there was something available of a similar quality that was cheaper and I could get delivered 10-12 bales a time! ;)

Anyone got a spare minute to answer some questions???

a) what kind of bedding do you use?
Shavings

b) how much does it cost you?
About £6.50 a bale

c) wht are your reasonings behind buying that bedding?
Tbh, only thing I've tried but quite easy to muck out and works well with mats

d) what would make you consider changing?
Cheaper price, something that was more absorbant than normal shavings for around the same price, good discounts if you by in bulk

Hope that helps :)

Will copy this if you don't mind as I'm almost exactly the same.
Mind, I skipped out two shavings beds this weekend and realised I wouldn't go back to them full time, they are such hard work after wood pellets!

a) what kind of bedding do you use?
Straw

b) how much does it cost you?
Price is included in livery charge

c) what are your reasonings behind buying that bedding?
The yard owner's husband is a farmer so they provide hay/straw which is available on site, it is also cheap

d) what would make you consider changing?
Realistic price, good quality, very absorbant

There we go, sorry, not very helpful really :p

I use hemp bedding.

Depending on the brand it costs £7-9 per bale.

I use it because it is really easy to use, low dust, rots really quickly, although more expensive than shavings, it is actually cheaper because you use less.

Only to something that is cheaper, less dusty and rots fast. I have been trying the elephant grass stuff.

I have 5 on straw and 2 on shavings.

Straw I get 3 bales for £5, free delivery. Shavings is £6.50 a bale.

Straw I use cos it's cheap, my mini Shettie is on shavings because she eats straw and gets colic from it. My gelding is on shavings because he eats huge amounts of straw, it doesn't seem to harm him but he does eat loads.

I would consider changing if the bedding was similarly priced and the bed eaters wouldn't eat it!
