Sorry for this random post- CAN you tell its the holidays and revision isnt really going well...

Firstly- opinions on impulse spurs? Both horses will question my leg (actually not my superstar mare atm!
grin.gif
Yep thats probably the first time she's been called that..!) so was just wondering if they would have amore "instant" reaction with them? Having come off ponies where the rule is 15mm, thats all mine are and I'm not used to riding with big scary ones so I'm scare of marking them if I wore bigger ones and my leg slipped or something!

Can I be really cheeky and ask for two sets of little vibes
smile.gif
Nora is actually leaving me amazed onthe flat at the moment... really really soft and responsive, never known her move so well and to be honest I don't think I've ever sat on anything that does move so well! Shes lovely, just come off the corner and lighten my hands and a little squeeze with my leg and she goes off in a gorgeous medium, sat on her arse with no change of rhythm... same in canter and she comes straight back to me when I ask
grin.gif
Shes going sideways off my leg and doing flying/simple changes too without arching her back or putting her ears back, Mum watched her for the first time today and said how relaxed and happy she looked as she goes off flicking her toes like a little dressage diva
smile.gif
Her reassessment is next week and I'm so desperate for her to be sound now, shes much easier than him when shes going

Also would appreciate some vibes for him, who when I took N off for a hack decided something terrible would happen so limboed underneath his bar taking some skin off his back, then cantered towards the five bar yard gate and took off and landed on concrete, cantered infront of the house, onto the lawn (went down REALLY well...) then launched over a rather large stone wall before catching up with me and N... GREAT, just what I need..! So luckily doesn't look like he has to run on Friday anyway (still waitlisted). He's perfectly sound but backs a bit sore so will lunge/equissage for a couple of days methinks

He's feeling very very well atm, but he's dropped some condition from his ribs/top of his shoulders... Hes got ulcers (but not badly) and ties up very quickly... He's been on winergy low energy, spillers conditioning fibre, hifi lite, linseed meal, sugarbeet pulp, and ALOT (well over 1ml/kg of bodyweight so is supplemented with Vit E/Selenium too) of rapeseed oil... Was thinking of switching him to medium energy (higher starch) winergy or adding some baileys topline cubes... opinions/what would you do?

And finally Weston pro pics... here!
I'm doing something really odd with my hands on take off like I do a robot dance (Im cool

) so any suggestions on how to improve that? Also CC please

For your ulcers try Equine Premium gut balancer. They have sponsored me with a course of the supliments so you may think this is just a plug but it's not. promise. Soap has not got ulcers by Jack has had a hard life racing and p2p so may well have them. They are both on it and look fab, Jack is less biting now to girth, and Soap is just gleaming, they are both really chilled too. I would give it a go.

No idea about the spurs sorry. Think the pics look fab, maybe try to think about running your hand along the side of the neck and touching it when you give. Robot hands aren't that bad you're not stopping her stretch or anything, so just a minor adjustment and you will look perfect
smile.gif
Wish I could look that good sj, we just look scared! hahahha

Not sure if this helps for the ulcers but my boy was diagnosed year and a bit ago with grade three. We got them to grade one and now he seems really well. But being on the lazy side was so worried about energy levels. Seem to have got it sorted and condition wise with Sarcens Releve and EquiJewel (this is amazing for putting on condition and energy). Both are seriously low in starch and my boy has thrived!! Not sure if this helps at all!!

oooh and forgot to say I ride with impulse spurs which have been a life saver as my horse can mark easily. I was seriously worried at first as far longer than I have ever been used to but made no difference to my position and no fear of marking!!

Thanks... Ran him on equijewel last year and he was about how he is now, but might try it aswell as if I remember it has the vit E/selenium in it so could cut down the supplement..! Releve has higher starch than the winergy low, but I was thinking about switching to it this morning... feed place are a pain forgetting the winergy in too so that might be an option...

sounds great with N

re. him,

at him on lawn and under bar!
crazy.gif

also, i have been feeding a teaspoon of baking soda in feed, which is apparantly very good in the ph of the stomach, so may be worth feeding for his ulcers

Looking good in the photos. He's got a fantastic jump
smile.gif

We ride my sister's very lazy horse in the long impulse spurs as normal spurs mark his sides. He's still very hard work to get going but at least his sides don't get marked.

can't see the photos, do i have to have you as a friend on facebook to see them?
vibes going your way, deffo.
for a horse prone to tying up and with ulcers, i'd have him on alfa, readigrass/graze on, sugar beet outshine, balancer, and that would be it if pos. if he was really flat on that, i'd add soaked whole oats.
re: spurs - i am really not a fan of them at all. i'd work on teaching him to stay in front of/off the leg at all costs... with 2 schooling whips for a while if necessary. light aid, if no response a tap with whip, etc. spurs are supposed to refine the aid, to give a pinpoint-accurate aid, not to give a stronger aid. i know it's hard on a lazy horse but you can train them to stay up in front of leg. it's a fine balance, accepting it but being off it, i know.

I thought I did have you as a FB friend

?
Thanks, hes a fussy bugger with alfa tho and they all seem to go psycho whenever I've tried it?? Any recommendations for a good balancer then?

oh, i'll log in and see if it works, durr. sorry!
i love Baileys Stud Balancer, have fed it to all of mine for years and they do fab on it. they don't have any other mix or cereal at all unless they are underweight, in which case a bit of Baileys Conditioning Cubes.
i've never had one go loony on alfa but maybe that's cos i use it as a cereal substitite, don't know why otherwise.

I use impulse spurs at home and lovely long pointy ones at lessons/competitions etc. I've gone the other way to Kerilli and got my schooling whip confiscated yesterday as I was relying on it and wasn't using my legs enough and was told that the horse needed to be going forward off the leg, not off the whip.

A lovely upbeat post from you.
Will def keep my fingers xd for the assessment, and vibes for your naughty boy

Hope you have a nice Easter break...get the balance right between revising & horses!!!

He's looking fab Martha!
grin.gif
laugh.gif
and so glad your mare is going well - fingers crossed for the reassessment!
smile.gif
As for spurs - i hated using the impulse spurs, i wear a pair of 18mm down curved blunt ones for jumping and 30mm for dressage for my lazy bugger of a mare
smirk.gif
with them you just have to touch her and then leave her alone which is far better than having shorter spurs and constantly nagging her
smile.gif
i know some people do really like the impulse spurs though!

As for food - mine are all fatties and lazy so i cant help you there!

Fab pics M - I'd be less concerned about the hands than about the didgy velvet hat cover myself....
wink.gif

As for spurs - I have a variety of sets in a variety of sizes, both round end and 'sharp' (so blunt not bobbled if you know what I mean) which you could just borrow if you wanted? It's not like I'll need them before July *insert sob and self pity here*

Would save buying stuff and would let you try them.

Oh and Kerilli....you are a person of normal height, try being me where trainer recently was killing herself laughing at the fact that my spurs...and sometimes my heels...hit the bottom of the saddlecloth, and then tell me I don't need long sharp ones to get the 'I really mean go' message across in sticky moments
