A random question, metal shoes don't rust??

Ponies hind shoes came off a few weeks ago, and since then have been sat on the wall where the came off. Today I moved them, and they were all rusty!

Now, how come metal shoes don't rust when on the horse, in mud, wet grass and all sorts, but once they came off they rusted?!

Because the surfaces the horse walks on causes friction and the abrasiveness prevents rust.

I think they must get 'polished' just by general wear on grass/roads or surfaces???. They do go rusty very quickly when pulled off.

Kind of like your car won't rust driving through the rain but will if you leave it sitting in the rain.
