A rant - vets!!

Ok - maybe you have spent more time at university than me. Yes you have a full time job - many do, but why be so rude?!

The vet hasn't told me what is wrong with my horse. I just paid them £1500 over the phone for a scintigraphy (and maybe xrays) today, the horse was returned last night with 32 sachets of danilon.

But what for?! I rang yesterday asking to be told, he will ring me back. 8.30am this morning I asked again (when I paid) if anyone had a clue what the actual problem was - still no phonecall.

YES he may be busy, however if he had the time to fill out a discharge sheet, detailing what the procedure was, and what the treatment was (one sachet daily for 32 days, paddock rest), surely he could jot down underneath "broken leg" or whatever?!

Edit: I know he's busy, my point is that he filled out a form with the procedure and treatment, but didn't mention the issue, so I don't have a clue what the matter is, it could be anything from a brokn hock bone to arthritis to deformed plates. Even if one of the receptionists just sends me a quick email, or text!
 
OMG i cant believe he hasn’t had a full conversation with you about his findings, that is the least you can expect.
 
Bloody awful way to treat you!! If I were you I'd be back on the phone telling them in no uncertain terms that they WILL tell you what is wrong and an explanation of what the treatment will or should achieve!
 
This sounds very odd to me. I am very lucky with my vet in that not only does she keep me fully informed during treatment, she also calls me regularly and umprompted to check everything is ok and that I haven't got any concerns!

Sorry, didn't mean that to sound gloating, just made me appreciate my vet even more!

don't get me started on vets - mine just charged me £53+VAT for a prearranged, daytime call out - travel for her was only 8miles!!
hope they tell you soon - what a bugger!
 
Thanks, I was terrified of being told I was overreacting!

DiamondSBF - my old vet was like that, she was amazing, but they made her redundant, because she was the most well qualified and good, and therefore earning the most

Damn those vets, you pay for a service and the service includes communication from vet to owner on diagnosis, treatment and prognosis. Nothing is as clear cut as you give the drugs and it gets better - you need to know exactly whats going on. Maybe the vet has had a particularly busy time with emergancies or your messages are not getting through so I wouldnt be impolite just insistant that you want to speak to him/her.

I can't beleive how different vets can be . One would assume that they all go into the job to help animals yet I have seen such an array of different vets from those that will shed a tear with you when you have your cat put down to those that aren't prepared to operate for colic because they are going on holiday the next day.

If your really not happy complain give them a chance to put things right and if not find another vet !!!!
 
That sounds very frustrating for you, I think you should keep calling until you get your answer! I'm trying not to write anything too naughty, but think the vet should have told you the diagnosis sooner as you need to know what your plan of action will be and your horses prognosis.
Here's my rant for you: It could be a 2 min phonecall that's all, I suspect they may have handsfree in their car so if they were on call they should have phoned you then!!!

Dont think its a broken leg!! But the vet who treated your horse should have made time to tell you his findings, and his reasons for dqanillon and paddock rest, and given you a diagnosis, and whether a reassessment is req etc. telephone the vets and tell them you need to speak directly to him asap, that you have paid the bill and expect him to return your call that day, or ask for his mobile and all him direct. It makes me value my vets even more!
 
Scintigraphy wont tell you exactly whats wrong with your horse, only the area that the problem is in. I suspect thats why it wasnt written on the discharge sheet...
 
Thats true, once the scintigraphy shows the hot spot area(s) then further investigation can be carried out but your vet really should have told you this and explained why he's chosen the painkillers and paddock rest route and what he hopes the outcome of this will show.
 
When shadow had a scintigraphy scan I was given a full booklet with photos of the scans and a full write up- and a full hours consultation before discharge- he was given field rest for 8 months with calocal D for 6 weeks - vet was fantastic- which vets did you use? Plus your scans were £500 more than mine!!
