I don't often get annoyed enough to post about annoying things, or in this case Person, but here goes ...

There's a woman locally who uses my arena about once a week to do flatwork. If she wants to jump, she begrudgingly pays me to teach her, as I won't let her jump unsupervised.

I don't charge her if she just comes to do flatwork by herself, and occasionally she brings me a bottle of wine as a thank you (usually timing it for when she has really annoyed me!)

On Sunday I harrowed the school and set it up as a 20x40 with boards and markers, and built a minimus course of fences in the other bit for my little boys to ride round (think six fences around 9" high).

This woman turned up Sunday night to ride, and spent 45 mins systematically riding on every bit of the arena, including around and over all the little jumps. Her horse has big feet and drags its hinds, so makes a huge mess at the best of times. A few weeks ago she was cross with me for not letting her ride the night before I had a clinic here, and had already prepped the arena.

Our pony is only 11.2 with tiny feet, and would disappear down these holes, so I have spent a large part of the afternoon with a rake (can't get the harrows close enough) flattening the take offs and landings, and levelling the rest of the school.

And picking up her horse's poo

She has just texted to say she wants to come back tonight, so I texted back to say yes by all means, but please would she stay on the "dressage" part and pick up her poo afterwards.

But crikey, I shouldn't have to ask, surely?

To my mind, she is either totally thoughtless, or completely taking the mickey. And sadly I can't afford to fall out with her, because the horsey world around here is rather close knit.

But I am cross

Although I feel better now, thank you!

Very ignorant / rude regarding not picking up poo! And a bit thoughtless about ploughing through everything, some people just don't have forward thinking!

You are very generous to let her use the arena for free!!!! She probably genuinely doesn't realise she is makng a mess - it may seem really weird but lots of people just don't. Strange but true!!! You did the right thing speaking to her about it, but I would charge her a few pounds in future - even if it just goes to a charity - it will make you feel better!

I 'hire' a friends school and i definetly would NOT do that! Tell her where to go or double her hire fee

All that hassel......and she might pay you cos' she has to,for a jump lesson.......and she might give you a bottle of vino,if and when she has p*ssed you off....TBH I would have have shot her by now!

Get rid ain't worth, and at least your boys don't have to ride the Moon surface!

You could try asking her to stay behind after one of her sessions to help you prep the arena for someone else. Maybe when she realises how much work is involved she will be a bit more considerate

Yeah and I do know pigs may well fly too

She is obviously taking the P... If I were you I would say that due to increases in insurance premiums/diesel (to use harrows)/business rates/whatever etc., regretably everyone using the school has to pay, poo pick and book well in advance by phone call not text. She'll either pay up or pack up - and she won't be much loss. No one round here lets anyone use schools for free - they cost too much to build and maintain.

The opposite is that today a lovely friend came to jump the xc fences, and I used it as a good excuse to take my own horse round at the same time (just in case I fell off - OH tends not to notice

). She was practically chasing me round the yard to pay me, even though I hadn't really given her a lesson, we were just out there having fun
