A rather delicate question...

Any recommendations to stop chafing on your seat? I've ridden my whole life, I don't understand why I've recently developed this problem:mad: Any sensible tips gratefully recieved.

Not a problem I have myself but it may be worth looking at the riding underwear that is on the market. It is probably designed to avoid problems like this.

Don't answer if you would rather not, but have you changed your tack, riding gear or have you gained/lost weight recently?

Otherwise if its really recent could it be partly due to this wonderful, not even remotely humid weather (or perhaps you don't live in Wales!)

Do you always ride in jods or breeches? If I ride in jeans, bad things happen! There are a few posts on here about the best pants too, comfy m&s ones seem to be good. Do you have a new saddle? I had one which was v uncomfortable! Sheepskin seat savers are fab if that is one of the probs you have.

Lol- poor you I know how ridiculously painful this can be....

I dont ride often at all now as my horse is injured, I ride friends horses now and again but just short hacks to help out with exercise.

The other week i went to visit a livery who left our yard at her new place and un-expectedly we decided to go for a ride.
It was really lovely but turned into a 2hr cantery hack which obviously i was not dressed for...umm, I had a thong and jogging bottoms on!

**OUCH** I actually had raw bits on my but!

Thanks for all replies. I'm pretty much the same weight I've always been, a nice 10/12. I always wear jodhs and wear cotton granny knickers. Its happened for the last two summers so I assume its a sweating problem which is particularly gross!

The only thing which I've found heals it is compeed but I'd like to find a way of avoiding it in the first place.

It probably is sweat building up. Try dumping half a pot of talc down your pants! It helps my father with his "chaffing problems" in that area so you never know it may help you too! In the mean time you need to get the chaps you have sorted out and healed... Nasty area to have an injury!

Have you bought new jods lately? Only I once got a new pair and the seam between the legs was, well, rather large... ooooouch! They went in the charity bag!

if it is a warm weather prob then I would go for good old johnsons baby talc. Do you have some thin summer jods? The shires cotton creation ones are fab, not 'cut you in half' tight and a really nice stretchy material - might keep things cooler? Lots of jods have quite a high polyester or nylon content which does delicate areas no good at all!

Second the new jodhs suggestion. Go for ones with a higher cotton content. And last year, I had a pair that seemed to fit me well, but one of the seams caused a sore on my bum.

I have this "problem" and the only way I find that helps is make sure pants have a gusset not a seam running through the middle, small/no elastic along leg creases, eg boy shorts. pull on jods, the strechy ones. IME any cream applied before riding makes it all worse.

You have my sympathy on this one hun. I have had the same problem in the past myself.

I totally agree with the previous posts about cotton pants etc but the other thing you could try is to use one of the panty liner products on the market for ladies with slight bladder control problems. I know that sounds totally gross but honestly it can help.

Also I have to say that sudocrem is the only thing that helps me when I do have chafing which, touch wood, so far this year I have managed to avoid.

Sorry for the embarrassing reply.

I too had this, despite a heather moffett seat saver, creams, everything. The only thing that worked for me was well padded cycling shorts under my jods :D sm x

OMG I have been to the docs 4 times in past year regarding this...seriously been swabbed etc to the high hilt, nothing comes back, this thread is a revelation I am totally and utterly amazed that I didn’t ever know about this issue before!! OMG!!! Sorry for graphic content but I had absolutely no idea!

I recently bought this underwear called Jellypantz and they are fantastic! Since I started wearing them I do not have any problems at all! Even though the gel pad is right against you, it does not cause any problems, and once you start riding you don't even notice it... it just feels comfortable... super comforatble and NO CHAFING. Its great and I highly recommend it... jellypantz.com

I use talc but the best thing me and OH have found are microfibre shorts type underwear. strecthy/tight/breathable- no problems :) she was having terrible problems with her M&S ones :(

Is your saddle synthetic? I used a Wintec for a bit and it was very sweaty!

I agree! I used to have a Wintec close contact saddle for my last loan horse that rubbed me raw at the pommel- just a walking hack was torture so I ended up selling it and buying a leather saddle with a lower pommel. Every Wintec I've ridden in on other people's horses, the pommel has bothered me. I've stuck with low pommeled leather saddles and problem solved!
