Not mine or one I am looking at buying, but how much for an overweight laminitic that has done nothing but short pootles for at least 5 years. 14h, 13 yo. Bucks & rears, sod with the farrier. He is good with other horses though, but can be bargey if handler is not confident & firm. Has had bute previously. Owner has to get rid because of various personal problems.
Have been asked & trying to think how to give my real opinion with tact!

try project horses.co.uk and ask a nominal amount for a good home - say something less than £1000 - to make sure the new person taking him on was serious and not just looking for a freebie. Could phrase it that he needs a special home where he'll be appreciated.....

If you REALLY want him then i would probably pay anywhere up to £10!!! i think you would be doing the owner a favour taking it of her/his hands.

That's my problem - how do you say that the Hunt is probably the cheapest option & I'm not sure they will take him as he's had bute.
It's sad really as I suspect that he is a pony that has been let down by humans early in his life & has not had the right person to sort him out since. The bucks & rears seem to be when he is confused/lacking confidence. Current owner is a nervous novice who bought him from a someone who "rescues" from sales. Where he is at now is on downward spiral of dodgy dealers & inappropriate homes & it's probably best ended now before some one is badly hurt or he ends up in an Amersham type situation.

Ladybones - I've refused to even get on it, no way do I want it, just been asked for advice that I am having trouble phrasing.

I might suggest that she tries project horses but I don't think she has a computer so might have to sort it out for her. Am just sconcerned that the horse might attracct dodgy dealers if she sells at a v cheap price.

If she tells everyone what you've told us she won't sell at all, let alone at a cheap price! Like you, i wouldn't touch it with a barge pole either - and certainly wouldn't pay for the pleasure if I had to.

I think she needs to find an understanding companion/project home and give it away. Either that or it have it PTS. It may be hard to suggest to someone, especially if she is attached to the pony, but at least it could save it from a life of misery if it goes from bad home to worse home etc etc etc.

Chunkie, that's pretty much what I think. Sdly the chances of finding a suitable home are pretty slim & she needs to move him pretty quickly so I suspect she is going to have to bite the bullet & pts.
Thanks for replies, at least I feel more confident in saying that to her now. Just need to think how to phrase it. Am expecting a phone call this evening so have a few hours to mull it over.

The behavioural stuff might well be surprisingly sortable by a confident handler inspiring confidence in pone. Shame that I'm guessing personal probs are money-related as a few weeks with professional schooling cd make it worth /something/. (Says she who is in love with a former rearer...)

If laminitis manageable could be turned into something for an older (lighter) horsey mum to hack out on & companion for daughter's pony or something?

Hoping for best possible outcome :-(

personally, i wouldn't pay a penny for a horse that was bargy and bad with the farrier, as they are more hassle than they're worth.

however... someone might not mind that? someone looking for a project? a hard project?!?!

is he bucky/reary because he's being handled/ridden by a novice?

i think it might be worth putting him on project horse, say he needs firm, confident handling... and put him on cheap... but vet the people that come to try him.

i'm trying to be positive here, because, as much as he probably should be pts... it would be a sad loss of a life if the only reason he behaves like he does is because of the way he's being handled....?
