A real eye opener - Fell off today and got foot stuck in stirrup!

It's not the rubber that is supposedly the issue it is the lever force applied to the tread with only one side supporting it, which I do get as an issue it just doesn't seem to have happened!

and great :p I don't need two of you :p ;) :D

Thank you for all your comments, i spoke to my instructor today and she said she has the flexi ones and theyre fab :)

I got a foot trapped in "bent leg" irons which I understood were a form of safety stirrup. My horse made to run out at a jump and then tried to jump the corner flag and the combination of sudden sideways jolt and cat jump threw me off. Apparently (as I was knocked out and don't remember) I was bounced on my head and then dragged. I was only free'd when the actual stirrup leather came off the saddle - my foot didn't come out. :(

I now ride in Peacock leathers with the rubber band as one side.

I have size 6 wide feet and have these type of stirrups and i have never had a problem even if the band goes,I havent even noticed always and they seem well balanced. I had used them for 10 years and never had them bend etc I weigh 11stones+. Would rather use these or any other safety stirrup than the normal types as i too got dragged ended up in hospital etc. All riding schools and more riders should use them. Glad you were ok though.

She said about the weight limit and she always used to use them until they broke while on a XC course and she's tiny and probably only just over the limit!

I don't think that there is a weight limit on them these days as they're made of stronger material than they used to be. I'd rather have a broken stirrup than a trapped foot after having experienced it. If my stirrup had broken as I came off over a x-country jump I wouldn't have been bounced on my head and dragged!

I only ride in Peacock irons as my daughter got her foot stuck in bent leg irons on more than one occasion. I was unaware there was a weight limit but mine are 4.75" and seem very strong stainless steel. I'm 11st, been riding in them for several years and they don't seem to have become mishapen in any way. I would have thought there would be some sort of safety advice given if there's an issue with rider weight, especially these days.

I ride in peacock stirrups. I've no idea if I'm over the weight limit.
During the summer I was jumping and came a cropper on landing and went head over heels out the side gate, my foot stayed in the stirrup. The irony was that I had just bought new rubbers for the sides of my stirrups but forgot them so ride in the old ones (very worn). Despite this my foot didn't come free and I made a right job of my ankle.
