Ok, so in a lorry, the horse loads, then stands sideways, head pressed against one side, bum pressed against other.

Isn't this *really* uncomfortable for the horse, especially when going round corners?
 
Its even more uncomfy when they have a tack tocker infront under their heads as they want to protect the organs in the chest they tense that whole area up. (Not expained well, sorry) Whats even better is when they have dusty hay with poor ventilation and stuggle to breath.

Ours are all too small to tough either side, but when the option they prefer herringbone to sideways on, and rear facing best.
 
My horses certainly don't stand with their heads pressed to one side and their bum against the other. Why on earth would they?

I've travelled most of them forwards facing, a good number of them rear facing and all of them herringbone. In order of preference they seem to travel best herringbone, then forwards and lastly rear facing.

Only if your lorry isn't actually wide enough for how long your horses is, and/or you don't have the partitions angled sufficiently. Have you ever actually SEEN a horse in a herringbone lorry, because it doesn't sound like it from this post!

They stand across the width of the box, but neither my horse's head or his bum touch the sides, if they did (apart from out of choice) then the lorry would either not be wide enough, not have the partitions angled enough, or both!

Because of the way a horse is designed, in general they find it more comfortable having their bums towards the front of the lorry. This is because they can then take the strain of the vehicle braking on their hind quarters rather than bracing their front legs, which is not how they are designed to stop.
 
Yes i imagine it would be really uncomfortable for the horse to travel like that but why would you???

Yes, i would imagine it would be very uncomfortable - i would have thought there are rules about how much room they should have either end? i've only ever travelled herringbone in lorries, provides easier balance for them and more space. Trailers are completely different (did my degree dissertation on loading and travelling horses in trailers - dont get me started!)

I think you either need to buy a smaller horse or a bigger lorry
