I cant believe it, someone is looking down on me I think.

Yesterday I booked my vet to come and check my new girl over and sedate her so I could give her a full clip.

So I got in touch with her old owner last night and asked if there was a chance she could pop the passport up for this morning as my vet said he wanted to see it.

So my vet turned up at 10am and set about having a look at the new girl. Whilst he was doing this the old owner appeared and handed me her passport. It looks like my girl is quite a special little thing.
She has a full netherland haflinger passport, so just got to work out what it says and how to change ownership.

So she is a pure registered Haflinger

and a cute one at that lol.

So back to the vet. He had a look at her and said he belives she is a sweet itch sufferer and that he doesnt want to take skin scrapings as he doesnt think its worth the cost. He gave me some advice on treatment for her and drugs ready to use prior to the spring.
He then sedated her for me, waited whilst I clipped her fully out, had a look at her skin again and confirmed it was sweet itch.

So Aspen is now fully clipped and recovering from her ordeal this morning. Im popping down in a mo to check on her and take pics of her with her new haircut (unfortunately shes now sporting a hogged mane and clipped tail

Im slightly confused why the previous owner hadnt given you the passport before? And that she hadnt mentioned the horse had sweet itch nor was fully registered with breed papers!

Glad youve got the passport now though

just to answer your queries/confusion.

just would like to say everything is above board with this horse, not bizarre.

the old owner forgot to bring me the passport on the day i took her (sunday just gone) however she has her horses across the road to me and we agreed she would fetch it over this weekend coming for me.

she had mentioned the skin problem but her vet had confirmed it wasnt sweet itch and the vet was at a loss as to what it was, which is why i was getting my vet out to check her over.

the details of her breeding werent mentioned in depth apart from she was a haflinger- how many people say there horse is something but when you look at the papers they arent pure bred? also she has quite a lot of horses so couldnt remember who she was registered with, though she knew she hadnt registered her with the Haflinger GB society.

the vet HASNT prescribed any drugs for the mare - he gave me advice and recommended drugs which he would prescribe should she need them.

Bit naughty of the previous owner not to tell the truth about sweet itch (as I said on your other post it did look very like it). Hope you are able to keep her comfy, sweet itch is a horrible condition.

Well that's cleared that up then

Glad you are happy with her. Personally, I'd be quite upset that it turns out she has sweet itch. It is such a horrid, debilitating ailment

.... and can cost a small fortune trying to keep the damn thing in check.

Here's hoping she only has it mildly.

but she did tell me about the skin problem but as her vet had confirmed that it wasnt sweet itch she didnt know where else to go with it. I know sweet itch isnt the nicest of things to take on but i believe this little mare should have a chance and im willing to give it her.

the reason its good news that shes got sweet itch is because now i can treat her accordingly, rather than trying and failing and not knowing what it is. I understand and accept its a debilitating ailment that can and maybe in her case will cost to treat but im willing to take that on with her.
im hoping the new hair cut makes it easier for me to tereat her and get right down to her skin rather than just soaking all her coat.
taken some pics that show the extent of what was being covered with her coat. just waiting for them to upload

That does not look like sweet itch to me

My understanding of sweet itch from having a mare years ago with it (willing to bow down to greater knowledge though) is that it is an allergic reaction to midge / fly bites which causes an itch hence the name sweet itch. This makes the horse 'itch' and therefore rub the hair away.

The pics you posted do not look like the area has been rubbed - looks more like a fungal infection to me.

I would get second opinion and scrapes done if I were you.

Lovely mare though
