This is a really silly question but I need to treat my rescue pony for lice so I have brought some insecticidal shampoo. On the instructions it says use 1 litre of shampoo per horse. Does that mean 1 litre of shampoo diluted into water or shampoo and water diluted together to make 1 litre. I'm confused 😕

Thanks

One litre of liquid wont go too far on a horse, so i would guess its one litre of shampoo directly onto the horse/into a bucket?

What do the instructions say exactly?
Could you copy them out for us ?

This is what it says on the bottle:-

Thoroughly saturate the coat with one part of the shampoo in ten parts of warm water, then pour the shampoo as required over the back of the animal. Rub this into a good lather adding more water as necessary. When clean, rinse thoroughly and dry. Take care to prevent the shampoo from entering the eyes of coming into contact with mucous membranes. This can be done by smearing petroleum jelly around these areas. In case of lice infestation: Use at least 1 litre of shampoo per horse and ensure that all parts of the body are shampooed. Leave in contact for at least 10 minutes before rinsing off. Repeat 10–14 days later. To help prevent reinfestation, the horse's stable, blankets and grooming equipment etc should also be treated with a suitable insecticide.

To me that means one litre does 1 treatment for 1 horse. Part of it diluted 1:10 with water to ensure the coat is wet, then undiluted the rest, adding water as you go to ensure the while horse is lathered up. Once you are satisfied that all hairy parts are lathered, then rinse off.

But I have never used this shampoo.

Personally I would do a patch test first, 24 hours before doing the full wash.

If you are still unsure I would ring the manufacturers on Monday.

I read it as
One part shampoo to 10 parts water
That is 1 cup, jug etc plus 10 cups, jugs etc of water
This is diluted as you add water after pouring it over the back.
If you are just bathing you would use as much or as little as you felt necessary.

For lice the strength of the mix is defined.
You need to use 1 litre of shampoo
That is 1 litre of shampoo to 10 litres of water
Do not add any more water as you wash the horse
After shampooing leave for 10 minutes
Rinse
Repeat after 10-14 days.

I hope I have got it right!

Friend has done this recently. You will need to make sure you use 1 litres worth of the neat solution to be effective. So it will be with 10 litres of water. Friend did therefore 100ml with 1 litre of water, so basically took a few buckets of wash as bucket held quite a few litre

We careful as neat solution is very strong

Thank you that makes sense.

Presuming this is dermoline insecticidal shampoo, I used it a Meredith describes.
So 1l shampoo into a big container of 10l of water (which it turns out isn't actually that much!) Onto an already wet horse, lather in, leave for prescribed amount of time then rinse.
