A rescue under scrutiny

I met someone last year who had a MT ex breeder and I think I may have upset her a bit .:o When she was telling me what conditions the bitch had come from she actually said what a great person she was to take on a dog like that after she had gone through such an experience . When I pointed out that another bitch was now having to endure what her bitch had she was slightly shocked . She hadn't realised that they just replaced the chuck outs with younger bitches .
I haven't been on MT for sometime but do wish they would stand up against PF and not seemingly condone it .

This is so true. My cynical side goes so far as to think MT supports puppy farming, in the same way that you or I buying a puppy from a PF does - taking the dogs from them just creates a space for another dog. I appreciate the work MT does, it can't be easy for them to see these dogs in these terrible conditions but perhaps if PFs did start disposing of unwanted breeding dogs in a more unsavoury manner then animal charities/government/general public might be more active in opposing the PF trade.

I am completely bemused as to how puppy farming is accepted by anyone in the UK in this day and age! I know a lot of us find it abhorrent but the fact of the matter is that ELECTED councils STILL allow this to continue! Just unbelievable!

i have watched and read the views. i had a puppy from them 18 months ago. yes i was homechecked. yes i paid £170 for my pup who was first jabbed and chipped. yes i did puppy training.yes i got his bits chopped off. yes i verified this. whatever their accounting skills are they do have the dogs best interests at heart. as for the re homing of ex breeding bitches i will sit on the fence. they are easier to deal with than dogs trust. a 270 k turnover against their expenses is diddly squat! when you go there the first concern is the dogs and their lifestyle. there is nothing flashy about the operation. no i dont agree with puppy farming.

So they neuter before rehoming? Or you had to pay for it?

It is my understanding from the foster carer and some of the people I know who've adopted that they spay/neuter prior to rehoming - as well as some that I am aware of that have had extensive veterinary treatment.

I know of a fosterer who was paying for stuff out of pocket and then being reimbursed - til the vet suggested that they just open an account with MT directly so that veterinary care could still be done but the carer wouldn't be out of pocket til MT paid up. That MT has done this to me says a lot about their trust in the foster carers.

the older dogs are neutered/speyed before re homing. as mine was a pup i had to agree to have him done by the time he was 6 months old. yes i paid for this myself.

So would you all prefer that these ex breeders were killed in whatever manner, rather than rescues taking them and getting them on the road to a better life? Seems a wierd thinking to me,and if MT is able to exist financially in a viable way..so what? The owners have made their work their life..good on them.
Doing rescue of any type is`nt an easy road, some are better than others,I don`t knock any of them.

Seems Chris Packham is now endorsing them

Idiot bloke. So he’s taking the facile, simplistic view that people are ‘rescuing’ these dogs as opposed to MT mop them up from puppy farms? I was interested to see that someone upthread mentioned that MT don’t have staffies/lurches, but then they’re not the desirable/trendy crosses that are currently media darlings.

if the government/councils got these puppy farms closed down that would be a start. many(most) of them keep the dogs in appalling conditions and with untreated medical conditions so surely they could be prosecuted and the charities could take all of the dogs currently there and rehome them, and gradually we would get rid of this unending supply of ex breeding dogs...in america, when ill treatment etc has been reported their charities cooperate with the authorities and they go in together and take all of the animals while the police deal with the puppy farmers...i know america has many problems regarding animal welfare but the rescue organisations seem to be pretty active and successful with prosecutions,,,...regarding the dogs trust sanctuary these dogs dont get a chance to be rehomed as they are supposed to be too dangerous, personally i dont think PTS is the worst that could happen to them and find it odd that the DT find it acceptable to keep them this way but if i wanted to keep a dog outside with good facilities they wouldnt rehome to me. doesnt make sense....

Penalties and sentences are a joke.

A puppy farm about 50 miles from where I live. Unregistered and unlicensed. Dozens of animals kept in appalling conditions.

Prosecuted under the Animal Welfare Act. 10 week prison term suspended for a year.

There is a puppy farm in the Forest of Dean not far from me which is in the headlines locally yet again, puppies dying from parvovirus and all the usual things ? It is disgusting, but at the same time I wonder how prospective owners can’t do their homework? Maybe that’s just because I’ve always had dogs though ??

Ive never been keen on MT, much too cosy with puppy farmers for me and not using their status to lobby against puppy farming which most big rescues do.

I totally agree, DG, far too bloody cosy.

Trouble is, it’s all legal and (I think) government supported/funded in areas like Carmathenshire. I cannot understand why in 2020, this kind of ’business’ is allowed. The blatant exploitation of animals just slays me.

I walked for MT many years ago and home checked for them.
This was around 10-15 years ago and I think this was at the start of the puppy farm breeding trend. Or at least, when it came more to light in mainstream media etc, surely its always been an issue.
