A Sad Day with Mr Wish

Decided to sell Wish (He's my avatar pic)
2 weeks ago I was giving him a couple of carrots in the field and he trotted in front and away from me, springing his feet up playfully but one of them caught me in the head! I now resembly Harry Potter in that I have a scar on my forehead now.

He didn't do it maliciously, he's just very, very playful, like a yearling, except he's 9!!!
Made the very difficult decision to sell Mr Wish today and he'll be up in the ad trader on 21.05.08.
I have perservered for nearly 7 months and my lack of experience really isn't helping him.
I don't expect a great deal for him, I'd rather see him go to a loving home with a very experienced rider that can bring him to his full potential. If anyone knows anyone, PM me. x

Well, he's an ex racer so needs an awful lot of schooling (which I was prepared to do) however I have only got "back in the saddle" this past year after about 15 years off.
He's brill in traffic, extremely forward going but as I just haven't the riding/groundwork experience I can't seem to progress any further. Plus after "the accident" i must admit I'm a little frightened of him and he picks up on it straight away!!

Sounds like he just needs taking in hand and being set a few non negotiable boundries....

i dont see his behaviour as "playful" at all..he sounds as if he's playing you down...as in you are below im in the herd..

and having a damned good smack wouldn't go amiss!!

Your bang on, he definatley see's me as being lower than him in the pecking order but i'm just so wary of him now, it's difficult to try and take the dominant lead.
He responds a lot better to my mum who is very confident, firm and calm around him. He's so highly strung and winds himelf up very easily. (She's been around horses all her life and she's seen just about everything) but she has her own (very sensible natured) horse, who i'm excercising at the minute!
It's definatly the right decision to sell as I don't think I'll regain my confidence around him and he'll just get worse and more dominant.

Have you and Mr Wish had any lessons or training from a good old fashioned horse sense type of person? Just to teach him what is acceptable and what is not and to teach you how firm you can (and sometimes have) to be? I was being bullied by our young mare as I just wasn't used to such a large animal - or one so flighty - and having seen her firmly but kindly put in her place, and being reminded when I needed to stop her misbehaving before she started, not only do I find her easy to control but also our much bigger again somewhat bolshy mare, and a big stallionesque gelding as well.

I'm sure there would be someone on here who could recommend someone local to you who could help you - if you still want to try. It does sound as though youhave had a bit of time with him though.

Cross posted!

If you are being trained - so it's just like a riding lesson but on the ground - you would take your confidence from your trainer. And as your confidence is growing he is learning all about your personal space and what you will and will not tolerate, so instead of being a vicious cirlce of him become more dominant the circle is going down the other way with you becoming top dog.

i agree...get shot, and buy something to enjoy....

a horse you get on with and one you dont...they cost the same to keep

Got your email gembob and replied.
Its hard to be confident around him after what happened and I'm a beginner myself. I'll be the first to hold my hands up and say I made a mistake in purchasing him as I haven't the years required for him and plus there's hardly any Instructors in this area to do riding lessons, let alone groundwork lessons!!

I know, I'm riding my mums at the minute, the saddled one in my sig and he is just a big gentle giant. He's spooky but always looks after me and loves cuddles!! I can't take him from my mum but I can borrow him!!

Whereabouts in Durham (area) are you ?

He's kept at Middlestone in Bishop Auckland and I'm just outside Bishop Auckland in Toft Hill.

no there aren't many decent trainers/instructors around that area really which would mean travelling to nearby surrounding areas for help etc.

If you are a member of ex racers you could advertise him for sale on there

Good luck with whatever you do.
