After what has been a pretty crappy year regarding the horses and vet problems, it ended on a terrible note at the weekend when I found our little miniture shetland dead in the field. He must have had a major heart attack as it looked very sudden, no sign of distress or struggle and he'd been fine a few hours earlier. I suppose it was the nicest way to go, one minute eating grass, the next gone. He was quite old and had had a hard life, he'd been a serious show pony and had won many championships over here and in GB. He came to us when he retired for a quieter life and to get more individual attention, and in the last year he's really come out of himself and developed a lovely little personality. In the last few weeks he'd been turned out to babysit the foal and they'd become great little buddies, even sharing a stable together. It was heart breaking to see the foal's reaction, he was just standing over his body and kept nuzzling him, and he didn't want to come away from him.
