Hi Everyone

I have been reading a long time. I took the plunge about six wks ago and bought my first horse. He was advertised as safe and sound good first horse. Passed vetting. He became lame within a wk.... ever since it has been two steps forward (initial issue seemed to resolve with rest) and three steps back (bucking when going into canter, throwing me off.....).
Just wanted to say hi. I foresee a long road ahead for us. And I ll try and use this place (and vet, physio etc) to do right by him. But he is a lovely sort. Great temperament. Nice to be around. So at least that!!

Welcome. Do think about testing the blood, with that timing of lameness. I'm sorry your first horse isn't the enjoyment that it should be.
.

The vet who did the initial vetting took blood. I asked him to run it. He then told me it had been contaminated. It is all a bit of a mess..... ?

I am sorry to hear about your problems with your new horse - I hope they are resolved quickly.

There are some very knowledgeable users on this forum, and whatever problem you are faced with, I would bet someone on here has experience of it, so please ask for advice if you need it.

Thanks. I will certainly be asking for advice. I really wasn’t expecting these issues (who does...) and am in well over my head.

Re: bloods being contaminated, I’d want some kind of constructive response from the vets about that...at least in having the fee for taking it refunded? Might be too late to do anything about it now, but you may otherwise had a case for doping? I’d be of a mind to return the horse and would be seeking legal advice to that effect. Obviously depends whether you want to keep the horse and persevere?

The vet did return the fee. I tried re returning horse.... That isn’t happening. Quite honestly, I feel stuck between a rock and a hard place. Vets coming out again, so I ll see what he says.
Thanks!

When you tried to return the horse, why wouldn’t the seller take it back? Where they a private seller or business seller? Either way, the horse was not as described.

You might want to re-post this thread in the tackroom- it’ll get more exposure and there are a lot of really knowledgeable folk who’ll be able to advise. Returning a horse not as described is sadly a common forum topic.

this. Welcome and I'm sorry this has happened with your first horse. Lovely he has nice temperament.

Also if you want some help/ideas post in tack room and can you provide a lot more info so people have an idea of what has happened, start at the beginning, age of horse, private seller or dealer, did you go to see it, what did you do ie handle him, ride him etc. Presumably 5 stage vetting, what did the report say, What sort of environment was he taken to and has he settled, Was vet with the contaminated sample anything to do with seller, was it convenient sample was contaminated after horse went lame, did the vet see the first lameness, what was the conclusion, why did the horse throw you off ie horse is beyond your ability, horse could be in pain from teeth, saddle, back or anything else, or new horse who is simply trying it on and testing you. What conclusion do you want , ie horse to go back or simply some ideas as to how to go forward. Anything and everything you can think of about what has happened. Do you have the passport, have you contacted the previous owner.
Sadly as MG says this is becoming a very common topic but there is lots of help around. Pic. of your horse would help in case someone can see something.

I am so sorry you have had this horrible experience with your first horse. Try not to despair sometimes there is a way through a messy purchase like you seem to have right now.

It would be helpful if you could post more details, i,e age of horse, private or dealer sale, your vet did the vetting or a different vet, horse's rough description in advert. How he was when you rode him at the owner's yard, what are you hoping to do with him if you can get him sorted etc. Is he living turned out or stabled too.

There are lots of forum members with both first hand experience and indirect experience of dealing with this sort of situation and I am sure they will be happy to give you good advice. Welcome to the forum, sorry it is not a happy first visit for you.

Thanks for all your replies. For some reason, I’m concerned about the seller recognising the situation. I have a feeling she posts on here. I realise it is silly of me, but she was.... quite forceful when I suggested returning. Basically that I must have cussed the issue, so ‘no backs’.

I do need help, so I will post in the tack room and try and answer all the questions above. They are fantastic questions. And I am not sure of the answers (whether SOME of the issues relate to him being too much horse for me or trying it on with a new owner).

I will do this when I finish work.

It depends what the issue is found to be- some things really don’t happen overnight. Depends also on whether the seller was aware of the problems and you can prove that?
