I always tell Manni to "have a good day" when I turn him out in the morning. And when I put him to bed I say 'night night'.
As to the girl who talks her horse round the sj course, it's probably a security thing for her, talking her way round the course remembering her instructions from when she walked the course.
We used to see a young girl out at pony bs who used to talk to her pony (who was called silly sausage). She used to say "come on sausage, you can do it, I know you can, do it for me, I love you so much, you're such a good boy, come on sausage, we can do it together". So sweet - again, a confidence thing I think.
