A small death....

That's a lovely thing to do, always remember one day a car in front of us on a lane just hit a cat and left it so we got out and moved it onto the side of the road :( it died in the next few minutes but at least it wasn't flattened and just left in the road!

OP, that was very thoughtfull what you did.

I have on a few occasions come across or witnessed cats dead/being hit and killed by a vehicle. I cant help myself, I have to pull over and grab the blanket from my boot and gently pick up the cat and place it carefully on the verge.

Just so that it's owner can see it if they go looking for it, and to allow it to lay in peace and retain some dignity instead of being ran over further in the middle of the road.
 
I was given a grey squirrel once, which had been rescued as a baby, was quite tame, but it escaped one day :-/ and I never saw it again..

And I saw 2 red squirrels in my trees last week, now they are stunning..

and RIP tufty...

You are very fortunate to have reds near you. There are so few of them left and they really are lovely.

When I was a teenager, I used to work on a yard at Formby, Merseyside, and the red squirrels used to come down and share our sandwiches. Wonderful.

I think there are still red squirrels at Formby, but probably not nearly so many :(

This is simplistic and inaccurate.

The red squirrel was almost wiped out by the Victorians before the greys were introduced. They called them tree rats and considered them a pest. Then reds from Scandinavia were re-introduced to build up the numbers, and later greys as well.

The greys don't kill the reds, but are better survivors. They were introduced by mankind. It's hardly their fault. Seems weird to be angry with them.

No-one knows whether the reds would be dying out as rapidly if we hadn't brought the greys into the country. They have been declining for centuries anyway, as they mostly live in conifer woods (not favoured by the greys) and those have been declining themselves for climatic reasons.

please spare a thought for this poor little pretty siamese who came into my care ( charity) thin so horrid thin emaciated vet said had a little jaundice, otherwise underweight. well got a phone call tonight to say the mate who went to feed him found him dead. :( at least he died in his bed cosy and warm rather than on the stree cold and under bush

RIP little man :(

We have one (not this one) that lives in our street, our neighbours cat brought it back and it was hand reared by them.
Didn't take the damn thing when they moved though :mad: spends all his time sat in my weed baskets, crushing all my tortoises wildfood and throwing them on the floor for sh....its and giggles. I swear he laughs at us sometimes. :mad:

Thanks. :) I worked in a park with numerous hand tame squirrels, they would often mug the tourists for food and in the end we were banned from feeding them as they recognised our uniforms and would jump on us when we were least suspecting it.

Believe me, walking through a 200 acre park in near darkness and having a squirrel leap on you is not good for the heart!

(nor is it good when a certain Hollywood actor comes to visit and a squirrel runs up his trousers)
 
We had a squirrel near us who was tame. Used to come Into the house and curl up by the fire with the cat and go to sleep. Used to take monkey nuts from our hands too. Lovely little chap xx
 
RIP Little Tufty :(

I hate seeing animals injured on the road.
I once made a taxi driver stop for a cat i saw run over, he was still alive but in a bad way so i made the taxi man take me and said cat home, wrapped in my coat and bleeding.
Rang an emergency vet and stayed up with him till 4am when someone came for him, he was screaming in pain, it was awful, he was also bleeding from his mouth so i was convinced he had internal injuries.

Anyway the next day i rang the vets where they had taken him and they told me he was stable and had a broken jaw and bruising :)

About a week later i had a knock on the door and there stood a lady with a bunch of flowers & a card for me - it was her cat, he was microchipped (thank god) so they managed to trace her & he was back home and making a full recovery :D:D

I'm sure the taxi man thought i was crazy but i didn't care!

I will go to heaven :rolleyes:;)

Regardless of whether a creature is "classed" as a pest, it is still a living feeling creature, as you said beautiful, as nature made it, nice that you spared some of your time for it.

I the past I have stopped for birds, and I stopped for a couple of Lambs which had got through a fence onto a road once, a lady stopped to help as well, unfortunately some drivers are total headdicks and even though I was perfectly visible and two vehicles and two people in the road, they didn't slow down :mad:

Yes, it may be a crime, but helping an injured squirrel and releasing it is hardly going to make a difference to the long term red/grey squirrel divide in this country, fair enough if you live in border country (ie border between reds and greys) but for the vast majority of us - there are no reds nearby that would be affected by one more grey.

I have many colleagues who would do exactly the same! Only a well thought out culling programme would make a difference, not the loss of one ickly squiggle. :)

Illegal, yes, sensible - definitely :)

A lovely post but I confess to being a mucky minded (or to be fair french speaking with the translation petite mort meaning something QUITE different!)

How sweet :) When I lived with my parents a few years ago, I was driving home and saw something bright green on the white line in the middle of the road (40mph). Pulled over and found a parakeet lying there poor thing (they're fairly commonplace in the area). He was still alive so I put him in the car (nothing to put him in) and hoped he'd sit still until I got home. He was starting to look more awake when I pulled up, and as I opened the door to pick him up he realised what was happened and flew off - must have just been stunned, but would have been squashed if I'd just left him in the road as everyone else was doing. :mad:

A friend of mine was once cycling along a lane when he saw a goldfinch get hit by a car :( He stopped and picked the liitle body up. It was still warm but lifeless and the plumage was stunning. My friend was involved in all sorts of crafts, and thought he could use the bird's feathers for something. So he gently popped the dead bird into his jacket pocket.

An hour or so later, he went to buy a book at Waterstone's. He took it to the counter and reached into his pocket for cash. A queue of people watched as he accidentally lifted the bird out with his change.

It lay in his hand, looked up at him, shook itself and few up into the rafters. Everyone watched open-mouthed as it searched for a way out, found a window, and escaped.

My friend decided expalanations were pointless, paid for his book and walked out watched by a queue of stunned people.
