My mate has had a swollen hock since about Tuesday, looks like it's from a kick and or a possible strain from twisting, the swelling isn't too bad and it has gone down a bit since.

She is in during the day and out at night, so I have been cold hosing twice a day (not that I think it's achieving much to be perfectly honest) and have left her routine as normal to see how it goes as she isn't actually lame on it.

However over the last couple of days it appears that I have a rather depressed horse, who just isn't her usual (grumpy opinionated) self.

As of yet I haven't had the vet out, because she's still eating etc, however I will be getting them out on Monday of she doesn't perk up (obviously will get them tomorrow if she's worse). Tomorrow I'm going to try her on bute to see if its pain related.

I don't know what to think, so opinions and or grumpy vibes this way, I'd like my little grump back :(

VET!! I'm sure anyone would be grumpy if they had a swollen limb and pain.

I am getting the vet out, the problem is the lack of grumpiness though, shes usually a typical grouchy mare. The only reason I haven't had them out yet is because I had assumed it was a minor tweak (swelling isn't that bad and initially she was fine personality wise and her usual grumpy self), although now I'm thinking it may be something more or something else entirely.

Swollen joint and depressed horse I'd get a vet to look sooner rather than later - negligent not to.

While I would have gone down the same route as you (cold hosing etc), I certainly wouldn't be trying a bute trial before seeing the vet. How do you know what you are masking?

Also, I take umbrigdge at the idea that anyone would wait until a horse wasn't eating to call a vet...

I think I would have rung the vet after a couple of days of cold hosing that didn't make much difference tbh. So I would advise that you ring the vet today. Not sure the vet will be best pleased though, I think you should prepare for a huge bill!

Well I called the swelling has gone down today (although still not quite normal) I called the vet and spoke to them over the phone, it's not my practice on call but another local one, so I have my vets coming tomorrow.

Mongoose of course I'm not saying I would wait until she's not eating to call a vet, as I'd said I'd assumed it was a minor tweak and treated as such, in the past with a very minor infection (and a even a tweak before) she has gone off her food. As such it's slightly less for me to worry about.

Pearlsasinger, she is insured, if it turns out to be something nasty and over her insurance so be it, it's one of those things that comes hand in hand with horse ownership.

She is rather precious (on three legs because of a tiny tiny - half a fingernail if that - spot of mud fever last year) - which is why initially I thought it was something rather minor :(
