It’s official, I finally had both boys colour tested (for no reason other than pure curiosity), and they are both black! People say a single copy of cream doesn’t affect black (hence why buckskins still have black legs) and that it’s nd1 that causes fading, but looking at my 2 I’m not so sure…

BBP is black with nd1 (EEaa, nd1/nd1, N/N for cream)

The little chocolate brown pony is smokey black, EEaa N/Cr nd2/nd2.

(Edited to remove photos - basically the nd1/nd1 is black in winter with coffee colour inner ears and a dark dorsal stripe visible in summer, and the black with 1 copy of cream is a dark chocolate all year round with hazel eyes and light ear fluff)

How interesting, I have a mare who is black (Dales ) in previous years she has faded significantly in the summer but not this year?
Also have a black yearling who has faded/Sun bleached massively so far this year .
One day I will have them dna tested to see if there is any difference

Both stunning, (though BBP still has the edge in my book!)
I’m a very lucky girl to have two such lovely ponies. BBP is the one with ‘the look of eagles’ as I always called it. So alert and bright with the pointiest of ears. The ‘little one’ (nearly 2 inches taller than BBP now) is much ‘softer’ in his expressions.

BBP definitely thinks he has an annoying little brother. He is still not amused by him. Ironic given that he has been the annoying little brother to the others for 15 years!

How interesting thank you for sharing, gorgeous ponies as ever. My little black girly faded quick a lot in spring but is back to being black🤷. She is definitely just black from breeding though.

My black single cream dilute is more chocolate or mahogany coloured most of the year too. Beautiful BBP and CCP (cute chocolate pony?).
