and we all thought it was maybe an abscess...

Well, the vet called last night, and due to us deciding that was a really foot gunk rather then pus, that I would take him up to the clinic for some x-rays.
So thats what we did today, as Ted is still on 3 legs with Bute.

So when we got there they did a bit more of a foot search, weighed him, and x-rayed him.

After 6 X-rays, we pretty much have a confirmed diagnosis:

Keratoma, which has caused pressure on the pedal bone and fractured it.

The following are x-rays.

and then showing what we are looking at.

They have taken a sample of the suspected Keratoma, and its been sent to the lab for testing.
So looks like Ted will need surgery. :(

Oh dear, not as straightforward as an abscess then :(
Still, although I don't have any personal experience of keratomas, from working in equine insurance I recall a few operations on keratomas that were succesful so hopefully that will be the case for yours. I believe pedal bone fractures heal quite well, partly due to thembeing in thjeir own 'cast' as in the foot. Fingers crossed all goes well for you - bit of a bummer though :(

If he has the surgery it has a very very high success rate, the fracture isnt the problem really, that just needs egg bar shoeing.

The Keratoma just needs removing really. Involves cutting away hoof, digging out the Tumour, then letting the hoof re-grow.

Hopefully all should be ok then. Still a bugger though just as we're coming into spring/summer weather! Horses have rubbish timing they really do!! :)

Oh no... So sorry OP.
It's quite a long slog treating a Keratoma, still the good news is you know what you're dealing with and can get on with treatment.
If you search Keratomas on here you'll find some recent threads from other forumites - one who'd had surgery, and the other whomeas about to.
You may find some helpful advise.
Good luck, and hope it's all straight forward and heals quickly xx

I have just had a look at some of the other posts.
it is a bit of a pain, and long, but in my opinion he will be worth the wait, and I have another horse to borrow while hes on box rest.

Just waiting for the results back and then will be able to move on.

Mine's is nearly into a months post op now box rest from a keretoma. There seem to be a lot of theses around so not as common as i thought then. He isnt on any bute etc and is doing really well. I just wished he was a wee bit smaller and it was his front not back as he is a shiver too which doesnt help with changing dressings!!!

I was told they are quite rare.
Ted is having to have bute, but i think its mainly due to the fracture that has occured.

How was your horse in his op? and after?
How much hoof have they taken off?

He went thought the op really well. Vet was very happy and surpised on how well he was walking on it. He spent 7 days at the vets. I too thought it was rare for them. There are a couple people on here too that are just going though the recovery period. He is very chilled out I wasnt expecting him to be this quite all is well. Now just got get though the box rest. He's got a hoisptal shoe plate on which covers the bottom of his foot. I have to unscrew them and clean his frog so he doesnt get thrush. It was much bigger then first thought so the hole is bigger and deeper. Luckly he havnt had to have it cut right up to the top. I will post some photos tommorrow. Im taking some every time I change the dressing.

Beau is 20 so I had to think hard about going ahead with the op. He is fit and doesnt look his age or act it when ridden!!

Probably not the diagnosis you were hoping for although at least you know what you are dealing with.

No wonder Ted has been in so much pain - bless him.

((((healing)))) vibes for Ted

Thanks everyone.
Its horrid seeing him in so much pain.
Im hoping to get the operation done as soon as possible, once we have the 100% confirmation of it being a Keratoma from the lab.
:( Then lots of time off for ted.
