A tentative how much?

I have pretty much decided to sell my horse, he isn't quite right for me for no particular reason, or maybe for lots of little reasons; but after some soul searching he certainly isn't my horse of a lifetime and that is really what I am after.

He's 16.2, rising 6 (or could be just 6 I havent checked his passport!), Han x TB reg GB Sports Horse by Golan the Bold. He's 100% to handle, clip, shoe etc, hacks out although is much happier in company - can be a bit weedy about hacking alone, he lacks confidence as opposed to being nappy though, and is fine in traffic. He has been to RC camp, had flatwork and jumping lessons and is regularly lunged and schooled. He is a genuine horse to jump (in fact he has never refused in the 9 months Ive had him and I do pop little fences every week near enough) but Ive never jumped over 2'6 on him because I am a wimp!

How much should I be asking as a realistic price? I know what I paid for him but having spoken to a friend who deals in irish horses he seemed to think that I was vastly underpricing him.

Any advice would be gratefully received.

I am very suprised. I am going to start creating his online ad tonight and I certainly wasn't planning to advertise him for that much. I thought £3500 absolute max.

try 4.5 you can always come down,,,hes young, lovely stamp and nice breeding as long as hes vet worthy shud have no prob selling for that

Looks a little straight in the back leg - or is that the pic?

If back leg ok - then yep, I'd go with the £4.5 or maybe more.....

What a super sort.

Someone will snap him up hun - he really is lovely! But totally understand what you mean about not 'clicking' for no particular reason. Its hard but kudos to you for being decisive about it and deciding to sell

You are right he is straight through the hindleg. I also struggle to get him to use the right lead in canter unless I pop a little jump first (although in the field he will canter about on the right lead quite comfortably). Do you think this will put people off?

I really am unsure about advertising him for much more than £3500.

It will depend on what market you are aiming him at. If £3.5k is your gut feeling - then I'd be inclined to follow it. It's rarely wrong.

I think the main sticking point is that I know what I paid, and asking up to £2000 more than that seems a bit greedy. It could be that I inadvertently stumbled upon a bargain?!

It's easier to lower the price than raise it! IMO he's worth £4k ish easily. He's sweet as pie and very easy to do, yes he has some little niggles but that's why you're not asking £10k for him!! He'd make someone a smashing RC allrounder, and he'd be perfect for a confident teenager to have as a safe project type to school on for RC/PC. His camp experience also counts towards his price - he took it all very well and has the right attitude about him. Ok he won't make it to the top, but like I said you'd be asking a lot more then.
As I see it, you got a bargain because the previous owner "fault" in him (for want of a better word, I know it wasn't fault as such, maybe more of a ceiling to his talents). You haven't found anything wrong, you just don't click. He's come on really nicely for you so you don't have to sell him saying "well he won't make it in BE", you can sell him saying "he's coming on well and will make a lovely RC horse".

Oh, and clear your flaming PMs woman!!!

What isn't working about your relationship??

I have been trying very hard to put it into words in my mind over the past few days.

I just don't feel I have 'clicked' with him. He is a likeable horse, and yet I just don't like him. He is pretty green even for a 6 yr old, and I just don't want to be bringing him on; I don't know why because I really thought he was the right horse for me. I guess I am quite a quiet and reasonably wimpy rider myself, and he is a very similar horse - we just don't seem to get on. I ride him maybe 5 times a week, and yet although he does everything I ask (with the odd teenage strop) I don't love riding him, and I suppose that is what it is all about - I am not a competitive rider, I simply want to get home from work, put my little boy to bed then go out and enjoy a horse that I love.

That probably isnt enough of a justification for selling him

Think it is.

Good luck. I think he's just lovely, and will make someone a smashin horse. (just not you).

I think you should ask £4.5 he definitely looks worth it from the pics and what you describe and nice riding club allrounders are what everyone wants!

The only problem I could see would be viewers asking why your selling him. In a private buyer I look for a genuine reason and though you not loving riding him is a very genuine reason it might put people off... maybe? Thats IMO.

I bought my mare from a mother and daughter who really loved her but her daughter was doing a-levels and going to uni. She really didnt want to sell her but her mum was calling the shots. And I thought if he current owner adores her like that then I probably will too. But if she said to me i'm selling because I havent clicked with her and dont enjoy riding her then i'd be a little unsure I guess. Anyone else got thoughts like that?

Well I could lie and say I dont have time to do him justice etc - but Id rather be truthful, I expect it of others.

I dont think it would put me off, after all there are so many different types of horse you cant be expected to click woth all of them (well I cant but Im not the best rider in the world!

)

Ill just have to see how it goes - thank you for the opinions everybody, very enlightening and helpful.

He is DEFFO worth more than £3.5k! I think £4750 and then you can negotiate. It isn't your fault that you got him cheap, so don't shoot yourself in the foot, he is deffo worth over £4k of anyones money!

BTW, from what you have said I think P would suit you perfectly

Will P come in on my budget?! Is she a straightforward hack and does she hunt nicely without any threat of broken shoulders trying to hold her? And will she tolerate plaited manes and sparkly pink hooves?
smile.gif

She is an angel to hack and hunt - I am not kidding when I say that I would let Benjy hack and hunt her if he wasn't so unstable and, ummm, small LMAO! She tolerates ANYTHING, and I mean that - even being ignored for days on end, still comes out the same.

PM me your budget as I have no idea what it is and you qualify for mates rates

I know what you mean about not clicking with a horse. I bought a WB I was not in love with at the viewing because he had a great competition record and seemed very safe (OH put pressure on me to buy something sensible for once). He turned out to be exactly as described but I never looked forward to riding him. I had to sell him three months later and I still feel bad because he never did anything wrong!

looks lovely and i think looks do matter...defintaly ask 5k. a friend just sold an ugly cob old hack for 5 and a half thousand! bonkers!
