Lots of good advice on the orignial one but one question you've asked that I can't see an answer to is should you start checking her straight away.

If the vet has seen her today and thinks she is 2 weeks away (and you probably need a big glass of wine and to draw breath!) then no personally I wouldn't

Tomorrow I'd investigate getting hold of some kind of CCTV, beg borrow steal or if they are really only £35 for Iphones just buy one! Then get that set up tomorrow so you can spy and see what she normally looks like overnight then you'll be better informed to spot when she looks odd. Only on that 'looking odd' night would I personally get up and go out through the night.

BUT then I've personally found they always learn how often you are checking them and drop just as you've left - they do seem to like their privacy!

As many people have said this isn't her first time and it's highly likely she's just been left to get on with it before (based on what you've said about her background).

Easy for us to say tho and if you feel better getting up lots for the next few weeks - do what you feel is right.

Oh and I can echo the volume of fluid - in people it's at least 2 pints ! so a horse is a huge amoung of fluid!.

This was my mare's colt kicking her 4 days before his surprise arrival...

(I knew she was in foal, but I didn't expect her to have it quite so quickly)

This was the morning I turned up and he had arrived overnight....

We are all with you Abbey 100% of the way. We all love Tess and your reports, and "token photos" :p - and it could not have happened to a nicer member. But do remember to chill, Tess will show you how it's done.

Any help you need, just ask .

Hello tessybear.
I'm domane's husband, yes we had mains electric fencing.
When he or she is born, you won't stop watching and starring at them. I hope all goes well whenever it happens.

One word of advice. You can never ask too many questions :).

Tessybear is going to have a cub :)

I'm glad you have that theory :D as i'm sure i will

Ooo thank you :) we have 12volt batter linked up and stock fencing so all should be well :)

Yes, as my OH has said, the fencing was main electric. There are loads of threads about the "best" fencing for newborn foals, tales of broken legs, hangings, rolling unders etc. The sad fact is that most of us can only do our very best with the funds and tools available. None of us would wish danger or accidents on our babies. Boo learned VERY quickly not to get near the fencing!

Ironically, the worst thing I witnessed was on the third day. They were confined in the undercover pen you can see in the pic of my husband crouching down as just after he was born we had the most torrential rain for about a week and as I'd been told that foals are not waterproof for the first couple of weeks, I was terrified that he'd get a chill so I chose to confine them when the weather was giving us it's worst. A friend had come over to visit and admire the baby who was laying down sleeping at the time. Pretty much to the very second that I said to her "Well I can relax now, the stress is all over", he chose to stand up, slipped, even on the rubber matting, his foot went through the double bars to the outdoors and he just kind of slithered out and landed the WRONG side! Mum was frantic, HE was frantic as I very quickly took out the slide rails and got them reunited. I then worried like mad for the hour that I had to leave them to go home and drag my OH back with me to adjust the heights of the rails! I don't know if it ever happened again as he was always with mum when I turned up after that, but it did panic me at the time!!!

have you got any horsey transport to hand or on stand-by? just incase there are any complications and she needs to be moved rapidly....this way you wont be running round like a headless chicken if you need to get her anywhere! and you will feel more confident if you know she can get somewhere with specialist care if she needs it
its better to be over prepared - double up on some things and get multi packs of gloves etc.
it may be a good idea to get her tail plaited up to - keep it out the way and it can be folded up quickly and wrapped in a tail bandage if needed.....she wont want to much fuss when everything gets moving poor girl :/

Here's a video of one of my mares foaling a few years ago. It's in real time and it's just over 3 minutes from start to finish. I'd already checked the presentation prior to videoing and it was perfect which is why I did not intervene at any stage. Had the presentation not been good I would have. When I watch this video back I find I have to sit on my hands because it's so difficult not going in there and giving her a helping hand. Anyway, for anyone squeamish, don't watch. I chose this video because of the colouring of the mare and the foal as I think it shows much better what goes on rather than bay on bay.
