I haven't posted anything about T for a while, and I haven't got anything good to update with
We were supposed to be going to a champs show last weekend, but T's been lame on various legs for a few weeks.
First vet came out and said she was lame on RF + LH, but she was sensitive to hoof testers allround. She was trimmed 9 days before, so they wanted to come back the next week and nerve block. Discussed OCD and she was taken off all food except grass and hay (was on balancer + alfa a).
I got a different vet out the next week, as I wasn't confident in the first vet. This time T's lame on RF + RH. He nerve blocked RF foot, pastern + fetlock which were all negative, and she was positive on RH hock/stifle flexion.
Ran out of time so he came back the next day and she wasn't lame enough to nerve block! Decided to get her in for xrays of her RF knee + elbow and RH hock + stifle.
Xrays (12 days ago) of her RF were fine, clean, healthy joints, so for that he said we'd give her a few weeks as she had improved anyway, if she came sound, most likely a soft tissue strain, if she was still unlevel, he wanted to send her for scintigraphy
In her RH, she has arthritic changes in her hock, at the front of the joint between the central and third tarsal bones. The plan was to give her 6 months in the field, as she's only 2
. Bute can be really dangerous in minis, so the hope is that it'll fuse in that time on it's own, the joint is too small to inject and she's only 1, maybe 2/10ths lame on it on a bad day. He was hopeful that once it had fused she would be sound enough to drive in the future.
Then, 3 days ago, I get up the yard in the evening and she's crippled
She was swinging both hind legs out to the side to avoid bending them, but improved with walking up and down the barn a bit. I don't know whether she'd been bombing around the field or what, but I thought that the chances were that it's arthritis in her other hock too, especially as she loosened up with a bit of movement. I did start to cold hose both hocks but then thought that cold + wet isn't good for arthritis so stopped and dried them
Anyway, she was bright in herself, just incredibly stiff. I left a note for YO to ring me if she was still sore in the morning (which I was expecting!).
When I got up to the yard on friday morning to check on her she'd only just gone out, and although she was better, she was still very sore on her LH (NOT the one that was xrayed). Vet came out and did a couple of flexion tests on it, after which she improved. He's going to xray it, really just to confirm it's arthritis.
He now doesn't think she'll be able to drive. She's only 2, and she's crippled with arthritis
Vet doesn't seem in a rush to get her xrayed but I think I'm going to push for them sooner rather than later, just so we know for sure.
She's on Metacam and Devil's Claw, both of which started friday night, and the good news is that I now have my bouncy, stroppy pony back
I went up yesterday morning to see her and she was running rings round me, and last night when I got up there I went in to flick some shavings off her back and she squealed and bucked at me several times!
I don't think I've ever been so happy to have her misbehaving
I don't really know what the future holds now
I'm to ring the vet in 2 weeks and let him know how she is, but I feel like we should be getting this leg xrayed kind of ASAP
And just to make me feel better about life at the minute, it's the 3rd anniversary of my accident in 3 days time
My Septembers are cursed! Next year, I'm going to hibernate for the entire month
Right, quickly, the insurance claim questions (for her RH, forgetting her LH -
1) Vet has written "DJD in hock causing lameness" on the veterinary certificate. In the vet's notes/medical history, it says "RH arthritis forming 0IT joint - hock."
Does arthritis = DJD?
2) The notes from the first vet's visit state "Lame RF + LH but sensitive to hoof testers on all 4 feet having been shod 2 days ago."
She was trimmed 9 days before, and I have a receipt somewhere. I did tell them several times when they were here that it was the week before that she was trimmed but they obviously only heard "tuesday" as in 2 days before they came
Do I ignore that and send the claim form as it is, or do I need to get the stupid vet to ammend their notes? I.e is it going to affect my claim
