So am on the hunt for a towing vehicle. I have always had small horseboxes so this is a leap into the unknown. Given the current climate with trying to get rid of diesels am looking to buy the most practical car for my use. I currently have a 1.6 Beetle that has to consume E5 which is 10p more expensive than Diesel!
I will be getting an IW505 and have a 450kg TB. I live in a relatively flat part of the country and only travel 1h 30 from home. If we went further we'd probably hire a two box. Do not intend to take other horses for many reasons. So which car do you all recommend other than the usual huge 4x4s. I do about 200 miles a week driving before anything else.

It doesn't matter how far you travel or if your area is flat, the vehicle has to be legal to tow under any circumstances!! I bought a kia sorento and I'm very pleased with it. I tow an ifor 505 classic with an approx 600 kg tb. So well under weight. Its very econto run around in as well.

Oh I was not suggesting having some illegal to tow at all - I was just wondering what people recommended of the smaller type 4x4s that people used. Have got the Kia Sorento on the list as my friends that Sportage's said they are definitely not suitable.

I was advised against the sportage. My friend has a freelander and she also advises against one of those!! To be honest my budget wasn't huge so I didn't have a huge choice but during my research kia sorentos kept popping up as great towing vehicles.

So on the list is Kia Sorrento, Hyundai Sante Fe, Volkswagen Tiguan, Nissan X-Trail. Any others or ones to avoid - Sportage and Freelanders are on that list - My Dad worked on testing for Freelander when it was developed and advised to steer clear.

I have a Nissan X-Trail, admittedly its a big aged by now. But I only tow a Pegasus Huntsman trailer with a 475k pony up behind.

I live in Devon so have plenty of hills.

The X-Trail wouldn't frankly pull grannie off her pot! I can't say I'm a fan of it and am looking to replace it. I am limited in where I can go and daren't tackle a good few of the local hills around where I am!

My advice would be don't bother with an X-Trail and to look for a different towing vehicle. Having said that the newer ones might be OK.

Also have been advised (by a mechanic) to avoid Landy's for towing! All well and good whilst they're OK but if you need anything done on them you apparently need to take a stiff drink and go and lie down in a darkened room for a considerable time.......

I had a 2ltr 4wd Tiguan, which towed capably. What I really liked was that when not towing it was a good day to day car - cheap to run, economical, nice to drive, reliable, comfortable.

Moved to a bigger car as I needed an auto and the increased towing capacity to tow two, but I'd absolutely recommend a Tiguan to others.

I’ve had, and know a number of others that have had, Mitsubishi Outlander. You need the 2.2l diesel for the 2T capacity. A really useful allround car that tows a trailer + 1 horse comfortably. Not manufactured anymore, 2018 is the last year of the good diesels.

Love my Tiguan, I tow my 505 and TB (460kg) in it and its great, have done a 300 mile round trip towing and where we are there are plenty of hills and its been brilliant. I went for a 2012 bluemotin 4motion so they are slightly better on fuel but still 4WD, off to do a 600 mile round trip later in the week for work and not stressing about fuel economy as its pretty good on the motorways too. Towing capacity 2.2t so plenty spare even with kit
