I haven't written in a while, but I have something exciting to report today! :)

It all started a few days ago, when we went for a trot in the woods. The Carrot Lady hadn't sat on me for a while, and I wasn't hugely interested in being sat on, but she gets really insistent if I complain and then I get a smack on the bum, so I decided that we would go in the woods. When we got there, the path was different. It was suddenly wider than it was supposed to be, and it had bits that were different colours of ground, and on either side were those big ridges you sometimes get in the field when the big loud thing that brings the hay in has been. I made sure to look at the path very closely as we went, to be sure that it was safe. This meant we weren't going very fast, but better safe than sorry! :) So then we got round the corner, and there was a triangle!! It was on one side of the path, and it was all red and white and black. It's never been there before! How did it get there? Maybe it made the path all strange?

The Carrot Lady really wanted me to keep walking by the triangle, and I really didn't want to walk past the triangle. In the distance, up where the paths meet where you go to the square place with a roof on where the Scary Chicken Flap Man and the Treat Lady live, I could see another big loud thing that had a long neck that it was bobbing up and down, and some men-people. Those big long-neck things are ok, because they can't run very fast and they don't actually chase you, but it still wasn't meant to be in our woods.

First the Carrot Lady tried to tell me that it was ok, and then she got a bit angry at me. She even got off at one point, and tried to make me walk backwards past the triangle. Does she think I'm thick? I wasn't happy about that, so I walked backwards straight off the path into the trees instead. That wasn't what she wanted, apparently. :o

Then, she led me a different way, and we walked through the trees for a short bit, which was ok, but then she wanted to go on the path again. I wasn't so sure about all the stuff I had to climb over and walk through to get there, but I came along. We were turned away from the big loud long-neck bobbing thing, so that was good, so I started walking faster, but then suddenly, we were right beside the triangle, but it was facing the other way!!  I had a bit of a leap, but we were too close, and the Carrot Lady actually started touching it and banging on it!! I think somehow, we must have got turned completely around, to come at the triangle from the opposite direction! Finally, the Carrot Lady had had enough of the triangle, and got back on, and we headed home, which I was very happy about. :o

We went in the woods again twice after that, and the path was different again! The ridgy bits and the different-colour bits were all gone, and instead, the whole thing was now soft and grey. It was pretty nice to walk on, and the Carrot Lady kept saying that she wanted to have a race. But the horse we were with yesterday didn't want to have a race; he didn't want to go for a trot in the woods at all, and kept trying to go home. I've tried that myself quite a few times, but it just leads to unpleasantness with the Carrot Lady, so I could have told him it wasn't going to do any good.

Today, however, we went in the woods again. I wasn't so excited about going, but then, we came at the path-that-is-different from the other direction, on the way home, and I ran really really fast on it, I had a race all by myself (with the Carrot Lady), and that was actually pretty fun. :)

Dear Spooky Pony,
I think I've SEEN this triangles!!
They were sat on the road where we ride, just where the Polo Man usually comes out with nice things for me. They were rattling like they were trying to move towards me - I got quite frightened and started to move backwards, quickly but I don't think my human was very pleased.
I wonder if its some sort of conspiracy by our humans????

Dear Kelly,

I think it's always safer to suspect a conspiracy. Then you aren't surprised when it turns out you're right!...Come to think of it, I think I've seen other triangles like that before, too. (Or maybe it was the same one, and it can walk? ). They may have been near more of those big loud long-neck things. Maybe they are all part of a herd? Do you suppose that the triangles are maybe big-loud-long-neck foals? But I've seen little loud long-neck things before; there was one at our place when the square sandy place and the area with little stones came. I always assumed that that was what the foals of the big ones looked like.

Dear Spooky Pony,
I think I've seen those too! Do they walk on water???? I think we saw one on the canal one day, I didn't like that either, but I've not seen their foals!
It could be the same one, but where I saw one, there was others too, like a little herd of them!!! There was also big fences the same colour as my humans bright jacket - it was all very bizarre!!
Maybe we should set up an escape plan in future..

Dear Kelly,

I think fences like that would worry me. I saw a bright blue fence the other day, and it worried me! I didn't know that the big loud long-neck things can walk on water. I find that thought rather worrying, too. Although there is no big water in our field at the moment for them to walk on. I think our water drinking place is too small for one of them, unless...there is a place at our place where the people-foals go to play, and I think maybe there is a really really small long-neck thing in it! Do you think it might come to walk on our water drinking place? I will have to check next time I walk past the place where the people-foals play, to see if there is such a thing there, and then I'll know to be careful!

Can I ask you what breed you are? I think you are the prettiest pony on here, and I always admire your plaits.

I have a bay spooky small horse.

Dear Foxy,

many thanks for the Polos! I don't get those often! You'd better join me and Kelly, then, in keeping an eye out for them. My usual escape plan is to spin around and run as fast as I can...is there a better one?

Dear bluewhippet,

the Carrot Lady tells me that I'm by Boat out of Ireland, but I don't know what breed Boat was. Or Ireland, for that matter. The Treat Lady thinks I might be at least partly Connemara, but I'm not sure why. Someone else thought I looked like a New Forest (which I like the sound of; I like forests. There are many beech trees in forests, and those are very tasty). And another person thought I was partly a Highland, which I find unlikely. I've never been to the Highlands, at least not properly.

Thank you for saying that I am pretty. I think I'm pretty, and the little mare in the field beside the sandy square place thinks I'm pretty too! :)

Dear BB,

thank you for the mint Likits! That's yet another treat I don't get to have often, unless I manage to swipe a lick as we are walking by someone else's stall. But if I try to swipe food, I tend to get told off by the Carrot Lady. She's a real spoil-sport at times.

Here is a picture of the kind of triangle I mean. You can see why it is so worrying!

And this is one of the adult big loud long-neck things. I think the one I saw in the woods was maybe a little smaller; maybe it wasn't full-grown yet, or it was a pony like me. A pony-version of long-neck thing, I mean.

Hello Spookeypony. I was rather alarmed when I read about your encounter as I have seen lots and lots of those triangle things when out with "She-that-brings-food" and I didn't think they were anything to worry about, they were at the side of the hard path that the noisy boxes charge around on and they didn't move when I walked past so I thought they were quite tame I didn't know you could get wild ones that lived in woods! There's a long neck thing that lives near my field too and I didn't like that much when I first saw it, but then I gat really brave and had a good sniff and a lick (didn't smell or taste too good though) and the man that lives inside it gave me a scratch. The long neck thing didn't try to bite me so I always thought they were ok - I didn't know they could be LOUD though! - Perhaps the ones in your wood were wild ones, or perhaps the one that lives near me is always asleep when I see it, I must be more careful in future.

Dear Spooky Pony,

The Knobber guidelines for encountering strange conspiracy-type objects:

1) always approach with caution - ensure you grow at least two hands to make yourself look as big as possible, snort, and stamp the ground so it knows that you are the boss.

2) if it makes no move to attack you, nudge it with your nose. If it does not retaliate, see if you can get your head into it.

3) if you can get your head into it, have a play around whinnying at yourself inside it and scare yourself with the echoes.

4) if you can't get your head into it, see if you can eat it.

5) if it tastes nice, eat it.

6) if it doesn't taste nice, try picking it up.

7) if you can pick it up, do so, and then throw it around for a while.

8) if you can't pick it up, kick it.

9) if it makes a nice noise when you kick it, continue to do so.

10) if it doesn't, boot it into oblivion and be done with it.

Hope these might be of some use to you in future encounters.

Yours, with lots of polos and the nice minty treats I stole from another livery's grooming box yesterday,
Monty Knobberts.

Dear maresmaid,

I didn't think about the possibility of the one in the woods being a wild one! There were people with it, though, so I'm not sure. They can be loud, but I've never actually seen one run around, although I assume they can, because otherwise, how would it have got in the woods?

Dear Monty Knobberts,

many thanks for the treats! I think your rules are very good rules. The Carrot Lady has one of those loud things with wheels on, and she's opened it a few times to get carrots (and pears!!) out, when I've been with her. I would like to figure out how to get it open by myself, then I could just help myself to the carrots (and pears!!). I tried to take a sniff at it the other day, but she pulled me away.

Dear Spooky Pony

I think when things are scary you should just JUMP them really big and fast. That's what I do, and my mum likes it when I jump scary things, her friends all complement me and say I'm very brave. Not really, scary big slow things can't move fast or leap big like I can and when you fly over the top of them it scares them into leaving you alone. Works EVERY time!! If the scary things are too big or too narrow to jump, like your big triangle thing, just stare it out as you walk past it. They don't move if you stare them out.

Beau

p.s you are very spooky if you are afraid of red triangles on sticks, my mommy says they're how the people talk to each other to let them know if the roads and things are safe or not, sort of like we would leave a pile of poop.

Dear Spooky Pony,

I've been working on this... unsuccessfully so far but getting closer. I've discovered from careful people-viewing that the jangly metal things that live in 'her' pocket, open the the loud box with wheels on. So i figured out how to get them out of the pocket. She got wise to this so started hanging them on a grid thing on a wall near my cell... I think she thought this was far enough away from my cell to be 'safe', but she didn't bargain on super-massive-giraffe-necked me. This backfired as when I stole them I pulled the grid thing off the wall and bit the jangly metal thing that opens the door in half, thus meaning I couldn't use it to open loud box with wheels on (nor could she) and it put her in a very bad mood so I didn't get my polos.

She has now taken to leaving jangly metal things in the door of loud box with wheels on, thinking they'd surely be safe there as loud box with wheels on is left MILES away from where I'm imprisoned... except yesterday on the way past the loud box with wheels on (whilst bringing me to my cell) she did her usual 'stand gassing to YO for hours whilst I starve to death' thing. I took the opportunity to explore loud box with wheels on (and jangly metal things) further and this resulted in a bit of a 'scene'. I think YO was quite impressed as she was laughing and clapping, clearly I am wasted on 'herself' as she just swore at me.

If I make any further progress on TWOCing abilities I will let you know.

Yours, complete with ASBOs,
Monty Knobberts.

Dear Beau,

I have to say I don't think I'm brave enough to jump over the scary things. Thanks for your tip about staring, though; I think that works very well. I didn't know that about the triangles being like messages about road safety; so do they mean the road is safe, or that it is not safe??

Dear Monty Knobberts,

[Carrot Lady is ROFL] I think I will have to keep an eye out for jangly metal things! I'm very good at searching the blankets that people wear; I've managed to eat several buttons (I like buttons!), and I know how to open those things that go rrrrrrrrr and also the ones that go pffffffffsht. And I can use the ones that go twannngg!.

Spooky

That's a Warning Sign, not just a triangle!! Be very very careful because it tells you men might be opening umber-ellas on the path. EVEN when it isn't raining!! My owner (well, she thinks she owns me) comes in the field with an umber-ella to get me used to it. She has treats under it, but I don't think the scary triangle umber-ellas have treats.

LiR xx

Hi Spooky Pony,

Some of them mean that there is a long neck thing nearby, some mean the people in the square loud things should go fast, some mean they should go slow, some tell them which way to go to other people's stables or food places. Not all bad! The triangle ones mean you should look around for scary stuff, the round ones usually mean you can ignore them, they are for square loud things, and the square ones are for the people to know which way to go.

Good luck

Beau

Dear LiR,

thank you for the warning about umber-ellas! I see those sometimes, in the big fields beside the woods where the men-people are that hit little balls with sticks. That makes a funny sound too! They sometimes have these umber-ellas. When I first saw them, I thought that maybe they were some sort of pony, so I neighed at them, but they didn't answer, so I've been ignoring them since. I didn't realise they had treats under them; I will need to go investigate them more closely!

Dear Beau,

thank you for the clarification! Does that mean that when you see a square one or a round one that flashes, you can ignore it?

Carrots,
the Spooky Pony

Ooooh Spooky, you have reminded me of a Really Good Day I once had. I got scared by a nasty horse eating plastic bag and ran onto the field where men-people hit things with sticks!! Do you know, it is the Most Amazing place for a gallop!! All smooth and springy grass.. I went on and on. My owner was making noises, I think she was excited! and all the men people were shouting to encourage me. But she will never let me have another go. Give it a try.. it's FUN!

LiR

Dear LiR,

you're allowed to run on those long green bits? I didn't know that! They look wonderful for running on, especially in winter when there's snow all over them! All white and fluffy and...runny! There's still those little flappy things on sticks scattered on them at the moment though. I think maybe I will give it a try this winter, thanks! :)

Dear SP I think the triangles are related to the big stones which appear on paths over night  These are the ones that are there to bite your legs! With the stones, the best way is to run away, or if the person I own gets off and insists that I go through the gap, then I make sure she is next to the stone and I bounce through the gap. This does tend to make TPIO get a bit shouty. The triangles are best passed sideways, especially if they are on the road. The sequence of moves is : put your head down very low, take a big step sideways, turn your bum away from the triangle, ignoring any of the boxes on wheels, and pivot round your nose, then bounce forwards away from the triangle. TPIO does call me rude names and TPIO's sister waves at the loud boxes, which I think is very friendly of her :) The Big Girl, who owns the sister does not seem to notice the triangles, I think she is a bit dim.
I can only share herb treats as that is all I am ever given :(
I can do all those opening things too, but that gets me shouted at as well, as does removing TPIO head collar!

Dear Current Appy (have I got the name right?),

thank you for the treats, as well as an explanation of the correct way to pass the worrying triangles! I think I may find this method easier to implement than the jumping one suggested by Beau earlier.

Dear Spooks,
Yes it is me the current Appy, I was in a rush to post  and forgot to say who I was, mind you I am used to EVERYBODY knowing exactly who I am :D
Love and herb treats
The Current Appy.
ps Please can you make sure the carrotts get here soon, as I am not allowed them under normal circumstances :(

Great thread, Spooky should be allowed near the computer more often. In fact, he might be the latest love of my life. All mares where I live, so a good looking young man does turn my head. I sometimes get to go out with a man-horse but my owner says I embarrass her because I spend my time with my nose on his bum. Well, a girl has to dream...

Polo mints and bananas to you (and I don't give MY bananas to just anyone)

LiR xx

Dear Current Appy,

very good to hear from you again! I hope the carrots arrive soon.

Dear LiR,

you sound so nice, you must be just as pretty as the mare in the field beside the sandy square place! Please come and visit me soon, as long as you don't try to bite my bum!

Thank you for the Polo mints, but I wouldn't presume to take your bananas from you (don't really understand bananas). :)

Ladyinred. Thank you for explaining about the umber-ellas I thought the picture was something to do with people digging in a big poo pile! I have seen umber-ellas but not close up. Sometimes when we go past the field where the people foals are turned out, it is very exciting because the people foals all run around chasing a treat ball and squeal and shout a lot and the big people stand at the edge watching and shouting back at their foals. Sometimes the big people have umber-ellas but I didn't know they might have treats in! I often think I would quite like to get a bit closer to that treat ball, but perhaps I would be better looking at the umber-ellas because they seem to stand still for longer. The silly foals chase the treat ball around so much they forget to stop and eat the treats (maybe I could go into the field afterwards to eat the treats they left behind!).

Does anyone know anything about those wheely things big people push round in front of them - I don't mean the ones they put poo in, I mean the ones with scary plastic covers, often with dangly bits bobbing about. I think they might keep goblins in them because sometimes they make a really really horrible noise, and sometimes they turn them round so the goblin can see me, I always think its best to trot past quickly if a goblin is looking at you so I don't really know what a goblin looks like.
