A using wood pellets question

I've used these in the past, this is what we were told from the distrubutor, I started the bed off with 6/8 bags depending on size of stable, and watered them with 2 watering can's full, then for the 1st week just remove droppings and mix in the wee !
After this initial week when you remove the wet when it can't absorb anymore, you need to add a bag of dry to the area you removed the wet from, mix it in slightly in that area, it will then expand with any moisture left in the bed.
We were told that you shouldn't disturb the bed once its settled after the first week so you're just replacing the wet you remove.
Its good but I like a nice thick bed where as I think these are designed to be used thinner.
I stopped using them in the end because I found in the summer it was fine just used one a week, but in the winter I was using 2+ depending on if they were in with bad weather.
We were told we would only use 1 a week regardless. Maybe it was my fault how it was manged, not sure really. It is being used in some stables on my yard but the beds are quite small which is what I don't like, so... personal preference I suppose. I did like the fact that it didn't smell much

We just mix them in to the existing stuff. Horse's movement and wee does the rest

As far as I understand it you have to wet a new bed to activate the pellets, if they are all dry they do not work.
When you are using it as normal this is why you need to leave some of the wet in and mix with the rest to keep activating the new stuff (but remove any seriously wet patches that have clumped together and become more red in colour).

I muck out daily and remove a skep of poo and the wet patch, I top up with 2 bags of pellets about every ten days, I put a bucket of water into a skep and then put the pellets in for about half an hour, I find that they work better softened up, I find that wood pellets are the best and most economical bedding I have used despite living on a farm with free straw!!!

I was told to start with a damp bed and then mix the dry stuff in as it made the bed last longer.
About to start mine on them this winter as an alternative to megazorb.
Has anyone used them as cat litter - they look to be the same as the cat litter I buy but far cheaper?

I muck out fully everyday TBH i would hate to mix the wet back in.
I also damp the pellets everytime i add new as i have tried using them dry & the pellets end up dragged around the stable & mixed up in pooh. So i end up trowing more away.
I just muck out scrape the bed back chuck pellets down grab watering can 1/2 filled, lightly water the pellets & 10 mins later or less you can cover them with the rest of the bed. Not all of the pellets are crumbly but they break down quickly, it works for me & my 3 dirty beastys.

I used to wet them originally but found my old gelding used to pee in one spot, so on that stop i would end up putting them down dry in that area!
So can I have a both option please? hehe

Theresa- I use it as kitty litter too, works the same as the wood pellet litter you can buy from pets at home etc but far cheaper.
We take the droppings and wet out daily, then top the bed up as needed, with partially soaked pellets, so that they start to crumble.

Which wood pellets are the best and the best value looking for enough fopr two horses so 3/4 ton or 70 ish bags i suppose.

Okay, thanks everyone. I've just laid mats and about to get a bulk delivery of the pellets. Just wondered how to use them most efficiently.

SNAP! i went for the nature's best ones... they were delivered yesterday... just got to finish lining the stables so i'm looking forward to trying out the wood pellets!
