A very sad day

Tia foaled last night but the foal was stillborn. We are absolutely devastated but are grateful that Tia is fine physically and the vet was pleased with how she looked. There was nothing anyone could do. She was 356 days. She looked fantastic throughout her pregnancy and the labour was quick but we could tell something was wrong when we saw his head. Chestnut colt with 4 very high white stockings, big blaze and very long legs. He would have been a stunner in the dressage arena one day.

I am so so sorry. It was a year ago yesterday that my mare had her stillborn foal, so I know exactly how you must be feeling. If you want someone to talk to, please feel free to PM me.

Am glad your mare is ok. If it is any consolation, she will be right as rain with time. I was back riding Dolly within a couple weeks, and she is as if nothing has happened.

Sorry to hear you have lost a foal. On a brutally practical note, I'm sure you don't want to think about. It is always worth milking off colostrum and sticking it in the freezer where it will last for a year or you could donate to a colostrum bank. Also other people have mentioned fostering, It will make you feel that your mare has done something worthwhile and not make her gestation seem such a waste. There is a Facebook page 'fosterfoal' which tries to unite orphan foals to mares or contact johanna vardon. Sorry if any of this offends you, it's hard to find the right wording for such an awful situation.

We didn't find a foster foal for Dolly, but we did milk off all her colostrum. Clodagh on here had some last year, and the rest of it went off Derbyshire last week. The foal was born sunday, and after having the colostrum, didn't need a plasma transfusion. It does make me feel that Dolly didn't go through all of it for nothing.
