Well weather down in sussex has be dire since yesterday afternoon. Jumped judged all day yesterday for the intros and training class and was really looking forward to competing today. Well woke up this morning and the wind was howling and the rain was still thrashing it down, but decided seeing as it hadn't been cancelled we'd plait up and drive over to pulborough (45mins away).

Got there at 9.45am and the weather seemed a tiny bit better, slightly less wind

but still raining. There were more people leaving pulborough at 9.45 this morning than there were people pulling in!! There were tons of withdrawals and Mum was definitely erring on the "let's turn round and go home now" option. But seeing as we were here I cheerily

tacked Hattie up who looked extremely unimpressed! and jumped on board. By now the rain was even harder and i was completely soaked through and i hadnt even left the trailer!

The dressage warmup and arenas were situated right in the middle of the gallops, all wonderful and good but it meant there was several miles of open pasture for the wind to pick up speed over and it was pretty much impossible to warm up. In each arena there were varying displays of antics, everything from refusing to even enter the arena to rearing, bouncing sideways, spinning, you name it there were very few horses doing a test that resembled PN 112!! Began trying to warm Hattie up and she was ok but just really not enjoying it much, went down to the stewards and there was just one to go before me, went back to give Hattie a canter and she bounced and leapt around desperately trying to bronch. Unfortunately i knew now it was going to take me a good 20mins to sort the bronching and i had all of 4mins. Mum then said she wasnt going to allow me to Show jump Hattie in this weather so i called it a day then a there knowing i wasnt going to get any test out of her

It was the right thing to do for me and Hattie, the weather was absolutely foul, the ground was "ok" but Hattie's only been right from injury a few months and it wasnt worth risking her or just having a diabolical result on her record, so completely drenched we packed up and went home - needless to say Hattie was very happy about that! She definitely made it known that she was NOT enjoying herself! spooking at everything and her tail got so wet it was sticking to her back legs so she was stomping around and kicking out to add to everything else!!

There's always another day

Gutting you poor thing, but so sensible. I have been sat at home for most of the morning (40mins from coombelands), thinking how miserable the weather is. But definitely not worth the run if the horse is unhappy with the weather!!

disappointing, but very sensible I think! I'm so glad I was doing it yesterday and not today... and even yesterday the gales and rain were not exactly nice at times!

It was foul there this morning!! If I'd not done day before dressage I don't think I'd have gone today. I was early round the XC, 9.30, and it was already cutting up! Took an exciting route to a few in an attempt to avoid puddles on take off and landing. If I'd have been later I'd have pulled too.

You live to fight another day!

I was at Coombelands today. The ground was hard, the sun was shining, the day was still. We came home to no washing, as there was no mud and a very clean grey pony. I can't think where you were today!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It sometimes best to surrender when you're in front. My aim for the day was to get it over with as quickly as possible! Good luck at tweseldown!

Well done today! was great to catch up with you

Oh no thats such a shame. Sorry i didnt get a chance to say hello sat....i think i saw you ...were you at jump 5 in training??? Was hurrying past in the peeing rain!!!

My friend on yard went today. She was very early on and just about completed but had a horrid time, i think you did the right thing. Glad i was there sat, just about to do my report

I drove home from my parents to sunshine. It was pretty horrid there today. The ground was holding up really well though. Sloppy is always better than glue! Good luck at tweseldown - I think this weather is meant to clear!

We were at fence 15 for the training class
smile.gif
saw you and your boy pop over nicely
grin.gif
bless him! He's such a gorgeous colour

Vic - agree ground was holding up ok - mushy rather than sticky - it was more that i the wind and rain was so strong and battering that i could barely see where i was riding while i was warming up for the dressage and Hattie had just had enough, obviously got out of the wrong side of bed this morning and the rain and wind just finished her off! If id had more time then i probably could have ridden her through it but better to save her i think
smile.gif

sounds a sensible decision - there is no point in starting a fight. I gave up warming up for dressage she just kept putting her bum to the wind! I heard so many people saying that they should have cancelled! Which I think is unfair on the organisers as it was safe.

Yup agree that it was definitely still safe, it was just horrific to ride in!!! I think if the course was at all hilly though they would have had to think about cancelling, they are lucky that its so flat and has good access for ambulances etc.

lol thanks, took some scrubbing to get him that white. I had a fab day, i think they did well to keep it running today by the sounds of it

Wise decision, we withdrew the more sensitive of our 2 after the dressage at Oasby this morning - shame really found she had somehow achieved a 29 dressage - probably for managing to stay upright. At least we hadn't travelled 2 hours each way for nothing - the old hunting pony still had a run.

I went to Pulborough today with the usual misgivings about 'shall we, shan't we'?

But Rosie's LOVES wet ground and was in her element in the jumping phases. A little disappointed with our dressage score of 39.5. Felt we did better than that. We were very rythmical: splish, splosh, splish, splosh!!

One person described the centre line and long sides as 'ditches'....that was a good description!

But I thought a couple of the marks for 'loss of balance' were a little unfair. You try trotting round corners in that much mud and not stumbling!!!!!

Anyway..... never mind, we had a great day and came 4th.

On average, only 15 people from each section completed....

Can't believe it was dry and beautifully sunny only last week at S of E!

I think you made the right decision...no point putting yourself though a dressage test if you're not going to get a jump afterwards
grin.gif

I'm surprised you even got as far as the venue actually...OH was supposed to be taking Trike to Brightling for a sponsored ride yesterday but I figured the wind was up around 60mph and I won't take the lorry out when it's like that
shocked.gif

Probably the right decision
smile.gif
Was pretty foul yesterday and Sat wasnt great either
frown.gif
damn british weather!!

What fence were you at in the Intro??
tongue.gif
I looked for you when walking the course and couldnt see you!! Did you see Dougal go past? He was a bit cocky and pulling on Sat and bent a bit right for some reason!!
grin.gif
Am putting it down to rain/wind!!
grin.gif
He was a super boy though and popped it all nicely bar a good look at the water jump! Thought that was quite close to the water for Intro. Not been there b4 and thought it was a great event
