My gelding has to have a wee before we go in the school. Leading him to the school he parks himself under the tree where we wait patiently for him to have his wee. Sometimes this can take some time to happen. He will not budge until he does it during which time we discuss wether he really does need to go and with me peering at his willy to see if its dropping, but he is always insistent that he does and 9/10 has a good long pee! I call it stalling tactics but its got into a real habit now. If he doesn't know we are going to the school, since it is also on the way to the paddock , and we just have the head collar or bridal on he doesn't do this. If we go for a hack we often have the same scenario but this time it's in another spot in a field leading him back to the yard where I have to dismount to open a gate. Anybody else's horses do this or is my horse just weird?

Could be that you've been riding before and he's been dying for a wee and not been able to go, remembers the discomfort and makes sure he goes before you start? I'm just guessing really but sometimes when I've finished riding my gelding goes into his box and has a really long wee straight away and I always feel bad that he's obviously been holding it in for a while during our ride. My little mare on the other hand has no problem stopping in the middle of the school and having a good wee. She has no shame!

My loan mare would only ever wee in her stable and in exactly the same place everytime. She would get really agitated if i kept her on the yard and was practically cross legged if i made her wait, lol

my gelding does this
i always tack up/ get ready for a show in his stable and if he sees a saddle or travel boots he will wee...almost like he knows he must make himself comfortable! after weeing he poo's to....doesnt like pooing in the school, but will on the lorry!
the only place he will wee though is in his stable...... so i think hes realised he has to wee...otherwise he could have a really uncomfortabe day!

my mares delaying tactics are: eat haylage, then drink, then lick salt lick.if we really dont want to work we will wee and poo...but normally save them for after...when the bed has been made tidy and neat!
