A wee update on the mouth sore...

Well, it hasn't gone yet, he still keeps knocking the top off it the little tyke, although he is doing this less frequently and it isn't bleeding when he does it so whilst he does keep aggravating it, the damage and recovery time is less.

I shared the vet fee with another livery the other day and had the vet take a look, same practice but not a vet that's met Ben before. He reckons that whilst the length of time taken for this lesion to heal is a concern he has put it down to the area being irritated by grazing and Ben itching it when it heals. He doesn't think there is anything in there and is reluctant to have a dig around because even though healing progress is slow... There is progress he also doesn't think its anything sinister. He has given me a steroid cream to apply as my over the counter stuff has run out and he says its a bit stronger, hopefully this will stop Ben scratching it. I was a bit peed off a couple of days ago because I was chatting to a livery saying how much better it was and that he hadn't taken the top off for about a week, bought the little sod in and guess what? Yep, he'd knocked the top off!
 
Piper had one very similar, it took months, to the extent the vet was muttering about biopsys. Thank goodness after they looked at it for the third time it decided to spontaneously heal, it was very odd.
 
I have to say, even though there is progress it is a nightmare! I just bought him in, was chuffed to see it untouched, tied the little git up to feed while I groomed him and by the time he had eaten he had somehow knocked it and it was weeping... Cue salt water, and cream! The thing is we are assuming it keeps getting knocked because it may be itching as it heals, but the truth is it could just as easily be because he is a great big clumsy oaf and its in a really exposed place! The vet and I did chat about using Manuka honey, but think that that could make it worse as honey so near his nostrils and taste buds could make him irritate the area more. I'm pissed off to the point that I've gone and bought a bottle of vino... Anyone want some?

Im seriously considering what I can use as a breathable dressing to protect the area but enable/allow it to heal, but have no idea what I could use that would be sticky enough to stay in place. I may call mr vet and ask if he has any ideas, this one step forward two steps back is doing my head in, obviously the steroid cream isn't going to do the job it's own. He knocks it out in the field and in the stable, so turnout 24/7 isn't going to help, neither is box rest. It's crazy, I've dealt with far worse cuts, lumps, bumps, injuries and illnesses, but this one is a logistical nightmare!

Not certain if it would work on a horse or not but could you try the spray on plaster? I can't remember what it is called but I used some on a cut on my finger and was quite impressed how it kept it protected and let it heal. It didn't sting going on either which I thought it would.

Try the Net Tex salve - I've used it on everything (inc people but they tend to object to the smell!) dogs, horses, cats the lot.It doesn't taste very nice but neither does steroid cream or sudocream - please don't ask how I know that :)

It's very healing, soothing,stops the itch and being quite thick doesn't rub off easily.
