Have I said recently that I hate horses? What sort of mug would keep one? Honestly.

In short; Horse had shortish hack around woods on Friday evening. Saturday rained all day, livery did flying visit in the morning and dad feed and rugged in the evening. I go up Sunday morning to find the first picuture under his rug. Horse completely happy in it's self, not tender when I prod it, neither hard or soft and completely sound. So I waited till early afternoon but still not changed so I just lunged him. I thought it would of gone down over night so I just asked my livery to report back this morning, waste of time, got a 'he looked ok but another flying visit'. Not happy when I go up this evening to find picture two. I've had a really good look, no sign of any entry bite or anything. Horse still happy and sound so lunged him again. I'm now feeling pretty fed up as only just got ponies lastest beautiful vet bill, horse was ment to be doing Dressage tomorrow and I had people coming to veiw him (horse is for sale). Perfect timing as ever. He has got farrier in the morning so guess if it's no better cancle veiwing and the ring vet. I'm sure the vet must be sick of hearing my panicly vocie badly trying to explain the problem.

Only things I can think of is a fly bite reaction but would it be normally for it not to be painful and would to last days? What sort of fly goes biting horses in the pissing rain before they get rugged. Would I not see the bite it's self and whats the chances in heavy rain? Other thought is muscle but then horse sound, not sore and it covers two different muscles. I would be impressed if my short, fat pony could of kicked him so high and that it isn't sore. No changes in his saddle etc.

Thanks - Two horses looking for new mugs to those whom reply.

My TB had a big fly bite like this a month ago i got vet out cause he wud kick out if you touched it but it was just a fly bite and it took over a week to go down fully

Looks like a nasty fly bite to me, my horse comes up in big lumps and bumps from flys, though not quite as big as yours. Also had another thought, have you washed your numnah with anything that could have irritated your horses skin? Could be a reaction to wash powder.

Yeah ive seen reactions to bites that big before, although not on rainy days! I would probably just keep an eye on it. I might even be tempted to just get on with it and ride him.. im not sure though.. hummm

Does he generally have sensitive skin? My mare does and she comes out in all sorts of lumps and bumps throughout the year.

The first pictures looks like an impression of your saddle flap and I wonder if your numnah has irritated him or if he was bitten under the saddle whilst you were riding?

I am sure it will be gone in a couple of days.

Never had a lump or bump before and not sensitive... he's ment to be my good one, the one that never has a bean wrong. All horse items have been banned from the washing machine (IT WAS NOT ME WHO BROKE IT HNOESTLY!!) so no chance of soap reaction from the cloths until I can sneak them back in

But good thought!! I actually don't think thats quite were my saddle (pessoa jumping) would put it's pressure. It's just strange how it's changed shapes and doesn't hurt.... I know If I had a bite reaction or had been kiced I would proberly kill you if you dared touch it!!

I looks very similar to when my mare was stung by a wasp. Luckily I was there when it happened - it started to swell then gravity took its course and all the fluid went into a funny shape. She wasnt sensitive on it after the first hour and it started reducing after a couple of days

I have seen a fly bite like this before! the reason it is changing shape is because the fluid inside the swollen area naturally drains downwards. if i were you I would put some bite cream on (global herbs one is fab!) and then just keep an eye!

my cob had 1 like that on his flank and it was ok but as it healed the top layer of skin came off which was v weird- lovley new healed skin underneath but the hair and old skin came away- hope it heals wellx

Hi hun it actually looks exactly the same as what happens to me if I get bit by a horse fly as I am allergic. I wonder if a horse fly has got trapped up under his rug and given him a real good biting. My whole thigh looked like that once last summer, you could actually see the swelling through my jeans and it was boiling hot and as hard as rock for about a week! xx

Its Urticaria......'nettle-rash'...

....its the body's response to release histamine (hence-antihistamines...) when something it doesnt like 'attacks' it......be it a bite/sting etc or something ingested.....and you get leaky cells and inflammation only you can't see that on horses, but on humans its usually pinky-red.

dont worry 'bout it, it will change shape/size and sometimes location and can last a couple weeks or more.
