After reading many posts over the past 24 hours - must admit i am a bit reluctant to post but hey ho.....

My 15.2hh ex racer whom is very very playful and jumped out of his field in excitement earlier this year has been kept in today due to the distance to his field and the paths being an ice rink - we are waiting for the water board to fix a leak from the neighbouring road !.

He was free schooled for an hour this am and was full of himself - we have had a lot of fresh snow so after discussions with yo we are going to turn out hopefully tomorrow - now do i
a) free school him for an hour - and turn him out in his normal field = but I cant get to yard until 4.30 to catch in - and i am scared he will run round like a looney and break a leg
b) free school him and keep him in
c) free school him and put him in the outdoor menage with hay - he will be on his own so still may charge about
d) take up very kind offer from YO and put him in their field with my other horse at dinner time and again catch in at around 5 - this field has only a short distance on the icy path but i will have to work over if i have a "lunch break"

I would free school before turnout and make sure he is hungry before he goes out so he is more likely to settle and eat. Turn out in the school or pay your YO to bring him in from his usual field a bit early

i would free school and put him back in the stable - you would never forgive yourself if any thing happened. better to be safe than sorry

D def and cut down on short feed that's what I've done and mine go out every day, but I own my own place and the paddocks they go out in are right next to stables as I keep them as winter paddocks, so reseeded in spring.
Best of luck, but in this weather you have to take what is best horse wise.

I would free school him if you feel you need to and then put him out as usual in his field. My thoroughbreds are out every single day regardless of the weather. It keeps them sane (ish).

Stick him out with a boatload of hay, I second Blitzen, my TB is out every day from 6-6, well rugged and with a pile of hay he is very happy, he is a fence jumper as well but I think he just believes it's not possible to jump fences with all this white stuff about!
