Hi everyone,

Need a few opinions on what you would do in this situation.

So, I sold my horse back in September to some people I know ( they are friends but not close, I haven't known them that long) because I was struggling with money and felt the only way to get out of debt would be to sell him.

I have now been trying to find something either as a bargain or on loan from a racehorse charity but have had no luck, I really want something just like the horse I sold, he was so special to me and I now regret selling him and think what an idiot I was to sell him as I had such a bond with him, I shouldn't have let money get to me, and he really is irreplaceable to me.

Tonight I get a call to say he's absolutely fine, but they are having to sell due to personal circumstances, I immediately felt a gush of excitement and I said please you can't sell him to anyone else, I really want him back so badly, and I'd cry If anyone else was to have him....

So, the thing is, If I bought him back for what I sold him to them for, I'd be straight back to square one and will have to borrow money to pay for him...

Or I let him go for good, which I cannot face!!

Keep for him is no problem because I can keep a horse where I work for nothing, all feed bedding hay etc. payed for, all I pay for is shoes an insurance and vets fees, which I payed anyway as since had a horse on loan, but he wasn't sound so I returned him.

Cheeky thing is, I sold him to them at an absolute bargain at £3500, as they were friends and I knew they were the perfect home for him, they have now got him advertised for £6000! Think I was taken for a mug!

Thanks for reading...

Don't see how you can buy him back in that case, unless you have £6000, hard to see they are going to sell him for half that. I would try and forget about him, save up and buy another horse when you are in a better position.

Well firstly, are they willing to let you have him back for what they paid to you? 3.5 k to 6k is a big jump and they may not take your offer. Especially as you've basically told them you are desperate to have him back.

Secondly, just because he is up for 6k doesn't mean they'll get it. What type is he? What's he done?

Only you can decide whether you can afford to buy him back, it is good that his care is covered in a way already but you need to think about what might happen if your work can no longer let you keep him there.

Sorry that's probably not much help but the first thing to do is find out if they will take your offer or not and then take things from there

Personally I wouldn't get myself into debt to buy a horse, especially if I had to sell the horse to get out of debt in the first place

Sorry to sound like a grown up but having to take out a loan to buy the horse AND have to rely on your job to be able to keep him sounds like a pretty big set of "ifs". What will you do if you end up back in the situation where you had to sell before?

I know you say you "let money get to [you]" but horses are expensive, there is no way around it. They also, I hate to say, come and they go. I can totally understand your connection to this horse and if you REALLY think you can do your best by him not just if everything works out, but even if it doesn't, then make them the offer. If not, let him go out in the world and find someone who is in a better place to see to his needs now and in the future.

What has he achieved to justify being double what he was originally sold for ?

People put large price tags on potential when advertising horses. A large price tag pays for proven. I think you will have to sit back and see he if fetches the required amount and then if he does not, make an offer. I don't thinking borrowing £6000 is a good idea and could easily turn into a mill stone around your neck.

sorry if it wasn't very clear, they will let me have him for £3500, which is what I sold him to them for, but to anyone else he's £6000. I think they have done one unaffiliated 80 cm competition since I sold him to them, so who knows if they will get the money or not, I guess it depends who comes along, I certainly didn't get much response when I advertised him, but I have to say they have some nice jumping photo's of him....

How will you get the 3.5k? What will you be having to do after you get it to keep financially sound? What will happen to the horse if you just simply can't afford him again?

I'm all for buying him back (i would buy my own tb back if i had the chance even though i hated him lol) but really really think about the financial situation. At that kind of money, he is more likely to go to a good comp home (obviously not guaranteed) so won't be terribly messed about.
