My horse has no fully waterproof rugs anymore.

She has to go out in company (will jump out of anywhere if alone, even with next door neighbours), and the choice is either a cow of a mare who kicked seven shades of you-know-what out of Porridge when we tried them together, or a miserable old sow of a mare who specialises in turning rugs into doileys. My lovely Mark Todd rug has had the neck shredded and my Horseware one has millions of tooth holes in it. I despair. Obviously Id prefer shredded rugs to my horse being injured by a kicker, but it really is becoming a pain - the biters' owner is very apologetic and has offered to pay for repairs but it's hardly her fault.

I just wanted to whinge, I love my rugs and love buying new ones but there seems little point when they just get trashed. I wish my horse would stand up for herself!!

I feel better now - the only other victim I have to whinge to is my husband and he really isn't interested in the state of my rugs

Oooh I feel your pain!! It's so frustrating isn't it.

Since September we've lost:
2 lightweight turnouts, 1 lovely lightweight Mark Todd combo T/O, 1 heavyweight combo T/O, a Masta half neck t/o, 1 Newmarket wool rug, 1 fleece and a Thermatex type cooler is hanging together just but I doubt will last much longer. A couple of fly rugs last year lasted less than 24hrs!!

Grrrr, and I'm sure I've forgotten another one!!

Buy a cheap lightweight, put it over the top of your nice rugs and let her trash that!! Worked for me!
You can repair yourself with any patches, and doesn't matter if it gets leaky cos your nice waterproof one will be underneath!!!!

xxxxx

Mmm, cow or sow - it's a difficult decision.

I'd accept the rug ripper's owner's offer to pay for repairs, obviously they're still damaged, but at least you don't have to fork out for repairs.
on the bright side, you can look forward to buying some more!
smile.gif

My pleasure - there's not many things worse than a rug shredder!!!

Just hope she doesn't have fangs that go through the whole lot lol!!!

Failing that, buy her a muzzle for birthday or wire her jaws shut lmao!!!

I 2 feel your pain after arriving at the yard this morning to find that snowflake had pulled everyrug possible into his stable and trampledd them about a bit... The wee'd on all of them.
I have just been up in the field in the dark bodging a 5ft9 rug on him when usual size is 4.9!
So I'm less then impressed also!

put an old green canvas NZ on top of better rug! accept offer to pay for repairs! and more hay/haylage in field to occupy them?

It's not a lack of occupation, they bicker over hay as it is, just because they can - this mare is the grumpiest horse Ive ever met

I shall just whinge (and buy a full neck cheap L/W!)

I feel your pain! I moved yards and put my horse out in a herd (he had been kept in individual turn out) in less than 3 months 3 rugs were trashed beyond repair by field mates.

What I found worked was spraying his rug with cribox and also mixing chilli powder with potent fly spray and spraying that mixture over his rug every few days.

I've now got him back in individual turn out and don't miss constantly smelling of chilli powder, cribox and fly spray

Oh no - I mean I love a good excuse to buy a rug but thats

Could your loan a Shetland [therefore couldnt reach] or spray your rug with some crib bite stuff to fend P's friend off?

Invest in stronger rugs, you need at least 1200 denier for rug rippers, preferably in a cross stitch pattern so the rug may gain a small hole but won't rip along the lines of the material. Shires do 1680 denier and Amigo do 1200 denier. I have a bad young rug ripper and a dopey mare who lets him carry on with re-designing her rugs. Amigo 1200d has stopped him a bit so i have teethmarks but *touches wood* no rips as it's so strong.

He has trashed 3 rugs of hers this winter already so now she wears the 1200d rainsheet on top of whatever other rug she is wearing.

oh dear - Iknow EXACTLY how you feel!

I buy cheap lightweight turnouts in every sale I see and stick them over the top of the nice warm waterproof one. Sometimes they last weeks and occasionaly a few months (gone through two so far this winter) but it is better than spoiling the good quality ones. My good quality rug is on its fourth winter and still looks good! It is also handy if you happen to live in an area where rug thieves strike (and yes ours are postoded but they are still stolen from time to time
confused.gif
) thieves tend to only take the top rug so it means poor horsey is not left naked in field!

Try a liberal dousing of Naf's ''No Bite''.....it tastes foul, and will stop horses biting/chewing your horses rugs......worked wonders for my rug collection.

I have also sprayed it onto manes when we had a young gelding who loved chewing my highlands mane off.....stopped him in his tracks....was last seen pulling a very funny face...

I know the feeling....

The other week Blue came in with a huge rip down BOTH sides of his Masta rug (which i thought was pretty thick!) the rip went all the way along both sides right the way down to the lining

I have no idea what he has done it on as we have post and rail fencing! And to do both sides the same?!
confused.gif

So i had to use the one which just about survived last winter, which i had to spend 45mins sewing up the neck cover before i could put it on him... only for him to rip the bit i sewed up again the next day so i've left it now

Drives me mad, he never gets nice decent rugs (Masta was given to him) and tends to get DH own brands in the sale as they barely last 1 winter!
