Not sure if this is classed as veterinary or if it should be in the Horse Care room....

I've laxed on the worming of my 3 girls. Not a huge deal (i hope!) as they're only kept with each other & never go anywhere else. They were last wormed beginning of November with this http://www.molevalleyfarmers.com/mvf/store/products/molemec-plus-paste-horse-wormer-1-x-774g

Prior to that, they were worm counted in the summer & didn't need any treatment. They were done for just tape in the Feb before that.

Anyhoo, do i worm for everything now if Im not getting counts done, or is it just tape? One of the girls is an aged cushings mare & another is coming out of winter quite poor (for her), so i don't want to bombard them unnecessarily.

Many thanks in advance for any advice. Im rubbish! :)

Hello,
I have looked at the wormer you have given and it does not do encysted redworms. These will not show up on worm egg counts (as they are living in the gut wall). The products that do this is equest (equest pramox also but also does tapeworm) or panacur over 5 days. Panacur does have some resistance to it though.

I would be worming again in spring for tapeworm anyway as they are older horses. Horses have some natural immunity in a way to worms but this will decrease as other immunities decrease with age (also in younger horses and i think some stages of pregnancy and cushings(uncontrolled)?).

So I think that you really want to be worming for encysted redworms and tapeworm now ish (spring) but I would get advise from your vet about which product as your horse is a bit poor, has cushings, are older and you are uncertain about encysted worming history, I would maybe suspect that they would suggest panacur over 5 days but I am neither a vet or an SPQ.

When you do worm it is very important that you worm correctly for weight as if underdosed it will not work properly and aids resistance to wormers. You could use a weigh tape or if you have access to a weighbridge weigh them.

Hope that has helped a bit?

That wormer includes the tapes dose but does not treat encysted redworm. You need plain Equest now. If the mare is very poor don't use Equest. The only alternative is 5 day guard but keep up your counts as there is a lot of resistance with that one. A better winter wormer would have been Equest or E Pramox, for next year.

I am an SQP.
