A 'wow this lad can jump' type post!! and a kinda ad photo/how much??

This little lad has been with us for a couple of weeks, we're selling him for a friend who has rather overstocked. He's typically irish, no name no breeding - 5 yrs old according to his passport, and 16.2hh although I think he's actually a little smaller, I just haven't had a chance to measure him

He's rather green/spooky on the flat which we've been working on for the last couple of weeks, although he's doing basic flying change work and he's learning quickly, but as i say he can be a bit spooky. However.. his jump... wow!! All spookiness goes out of the window and he just flys!!! The upright is 1.50, the bigger oxer not far off that, and with work on his flatwork we think he could go higher. So what do you think??

MMMM nice very similar to my rising 5 yo, wouldnt take much to ruin him jumping that height (sorry not normally negative) but had a similar experience with last horse.

I jump no more than 1.05m atm even if he can jump more. Spend more time working on flat work to improve his jumping. Also Irish horse are a little slower to mature. Always a risk overdoing it??

Would want £8K for my boy as he is (will start BE later in the year) ?
 
Hes a sweetie and really does try.
Hes jumping them cleanly and not making a bad shape.

However, its two fences. You say hes spooky, my grey mare from ireland was terribly spooky too!

He is seriously weak everywhere with little to no muscle. You look at my 5 year old and youll understand what im talking about.

I would say because he really is unknown in everyway he'd be worth around £3k. Hes not for a inexperienced rider, he is green and needs to go out and see life.

I wouldnt want to be spending any more than £3k.

He is a lovely looking horse though and I'm sure very talented. It's a shame he doesn't have any papers though
 
Sorry forgot to ad that I paid £3800 for my boy a year ago and it been a year of hard work and money on training but he was the same a year ago as your boy and I paid a bit more as he is well bred.
He has took a year and will be 1 1/2 years before he goes out in the summer and then he still might not be ready.
Irsih horse are alot slower i find to bring on (had 3)

have to agree £3500 to £4k
 
Due to the fact that he has no recorded breeding and is green and spooky i would say £3 - 4K, he is lovely though and obviously has alot of potential, could you not go and do a british novice on a ticket with him? as he is unproven this really effects his value. Also alot more work needed on the flat as I agree with a previous post about his lack of muscle.
 
I think he is lovely - a super type - lovely symetrical shape. If he where a NH racehorse he would be moving on to jumping propper "fences" (not hurdles) some of which are pretty beefy (over 4ft!)
Its not like he looks worried jumping those fences (and after all the poles will fall down) - Im sure showjumpers have jumped young horses over bigger fences?
I think alot of people are quick to judge but if a horse is happy and not being over faced where is the problem? Though I do understand the pushing too much too soon, Im still doing PN on a 8year old who has all the scope to burn but has potential to be a "worrier" so I dont push him.
If his dressage was really sharp, good and consistant at that age with that jump - if he is kind and fully sound and vetted, in this market you could probably name your price!
Only thing I dont like about him is he is grey.
 
Well it does kinda!!

That is like saying just because a horse can work better on the flat or do more lateral work than another doesnt mean it is worth more - of course it does!

Lovely horse and as Nats says a cracking jump but agree could be a bit much for a green 5yr old - and it may love it now but might not when its bored of it!

You have a lovely position as well

We're hoping to maybe jump him round a course over the weekend and possibly take him out and about in the next week or so, so hopefully we'll have more of an idea about him after that... we do have some history on him - he has hunted in ireland (like every other irish horse) and he's done some jumping over there too - I didn't say we were jumping him loads, I said we'd been working on his flatwork but as we'd only jumped him once or twice we wanted to see what he could do, otherwise its very difficult to talk to buyers when you've never really seen him jump

Dont worry Icklemadame.
Unfortunately many will worry seeing a 5 year old being jumped around 1.50m
Im sure youll do whats best for him. Be nice to see and hear how he goes at his show

that will def give you an idea at what hes capable of.

If he was in a sjing yard Im sure he'd be jumped over such a fence just to see what hes capable of and of course to show off to sell.
 
I think he is lovely and he was the sort of thing I was looking for when I was looking for a horse but in my personal opinion you don't need to jump nearly 5 foot to see his scope and jumping technique

But yes everyone is right in saying that if he was at a SJ's yard that's exactly what they would do (as they tried to do with my horse before I got him!) so I'm probably just being overprotective

Don't take it personally, I reckon you'll do really well bringing him on and selling him.
 
Thank you - we're not consistently jumping him at this height, or in fact jumping him at all, he jumped the 1.50 upright twice (the two photos I took) and flew it as though it wasn't there, and again the bigger oxer he did twice, the second times were just to check the first times weren't a fluke as we were so blown away!! We're very aware he needs more muscle and more work - his flatwork isn't too bad he is just a bit green - basically he goes beautifully all the way round the school but always spooks in the same place for no reason, we've spent the last 3 weeks trying to work out why!! He was very skinny when he came so he looks a lot better than he did, now he just needs some muscle, but we're working on that daily. I ride him quite a bit (its not me on him in the photos btw) and I'm only a petite 5ft and I handle him easily - we've taken him out round the farm and popped rails on him no problem. He's very very sweet on the ground and no problem at all to handle, I was pottering around tidying his legs yesterday for over an hour and he just stood stock still, dozing in the sun.

He is wonderful! If I was in a position to buy my own horse, I'd have him in a second. Don't worry about people's opinions - as always when it comes to horses, there are as many ways of doing things as there are horse owners... (this is one of the less critical threads on this board right now! :-0)
 
i do actully agree with you two jumping a horse at that age at that height can actully do damage later on in life
 
He's a lovely looking boy and no doubt has potential! I wouldn't expect to pay more than £3k for him either though! Sorry! That's what I paid for my lad at rising 5 yrs old - he isn't papered.
I am aware you've said you don't jump this height very often but what I would say to you is do be very careful you don't push him too far too soon!
I bought my boy from a lady who bought him to BSJA - I was told he too had a phenomenal jump. I ended up having no end of problems with my lad and a suspected back injury - he had 9 months off work and was referred to AHT for tests - I was advised the likely cause was muscular problems probably from doing too much too soon! He's fine now but I wouldn't wish those 9 months of hell on anyone!
Of course I'm not saying that would happen to your lad just telling you my experience - I would never jump a young horse that high after that!
He is gorgeous though!
Don't feel scared about posting! It can be very 'cliquey' on here but most of the time you do get some good advice from some nice people! Ignore the ones who give you grief!
 
If he was over here still he would be expected to jump round a course of at least 1.20 in the 5 yr old qualifiers, with some of the larger shows jumping bigger in the final.
He looks a really nice horse. Did he do any SJAI over here as a four year old?
 
As we have no name for him we have no way of looking anything up

TBH looking at his teeth I would say he was slightly older - maybe 6/7 - but the passport says 5 so... gwd knows!!
