Do you think that would be sufficient, similar level, companionship for the yearling? They’d be living out together and I know the 3yo will play ‘til the cows come home.

I may be doing something unplanned, so much for buying myself a ridden pony…

Similar in size currently, yearling is due to make 1.3hh bigger eventually. 3yo is fair but won’t take any messing when he ends up smaller! In my head it works ok but wanted to double check with the hive mind in case I’m getting carried away and rationalising it purely because I’m so excited about this opportunity ?

I do and have always kept a group of mixed age youngsters together. Ages 1 to 4. No problems at all - I just make sure I integrrate them carefully and make the sure the youngest knows the field and boundaries before the bigger ones go out.

I did exactly that. The yearling completely ignored the just 3 year old I went out and bought specifically as her playmate. She was completely bonded to my 28 year old pony and only wanted to be with him!

I had a 16hh 2yo arrive as a weaning buddy for my homebred foal...that was the December, so essentially, yes i then had a yearling and 3yo. she was about 13hh when he came and she was the quicker and brighter out of the 2 of them, and he had such a lovely temperament so it was a good match. she was slightly annoying but he was patient, kind and playful and just put her in her place now and then when she got too annoying. it worked well. I think his lovely attitude was part of the reason for success though.

I have two yearling fillies - both have latched on to different geldings and ignore each other. I tried…it appears having a boyfriend trumps having someone to play with!
