As the title says really, why did I have to chose such a breakable horse?!

Had a lovely ride on Saturday in the snow after Conn had had a play in the field. Brought him out of his Box on Sunday to find his leg was slightly swollen and warm around his fetlock joint.
Decided to turn him out to see if a gentle stroll would help it go down but bought him in and no difference. Decided that box rest for a day would be a good idea to see if it went down any as well as cold hosing it twice (morning and evening)
This evening, went up and his leg is the size of a balloon, all hot up to his hock, I have no idea what he has done so I've given up on my usual 'leave him in, it'll be fine' and am calling the vet first thing in the morning.
Too icy to trot him up tonight but was sound in walk when we went for a 10 minute pootle and was sound in trot yesterday.
Any ideas what he could have done?

U checked for any sign of mud fever, even tiniest scabs?
Iv had that with my tb and turn out did help with the swelling I don't think standing in helps. Tiny scabs of mud fever sorted and he's getting there
 
oh no blooming horses!!

my lad had a fat leg the other week, it was the day after doing arena eventing. however it turned out he had a couple of tiny mud fever scabs under his fetlock that I couldnt see and could hardly feel
once they were treated he was fine. he wasn't lame either

hope is something as simple
 
Cold hose, check for tiny scabs, pick off, clean with salty water, stable bandage, if it swelled up after 3 days its an infection so need ab's. if not you need xrays. Check not a foot abscess brewing cos swollen fetlock could also be pus from the foot.
 
thatsmygirl and soulfull - thanks guys, I did notice a couple of scab-like things on hi leg, I'll have a better check of them tomorrow as I thought they could just be mud! He does have a couple of scabs on his other leg, could he have different reactions to mud fever on different legs?

putasocinit - love the name! I will try that tomorrow, thanks for the tips! I did have a good prod around his foot, don't think there was anything there but the yard farrier is coming on wednesday so I'll get him to take a look if the vet doesn't find anything.

I think it's a question Al often asks herself. One goes for constant low-level injury (such as rolling on flints, randomly puffy legs, seedy toe...), the other goes for one big event a year (so far a broken leg and severe pressure sores following gashing her knee open resulting in nearly 4 months off work and lovely scarring, narrowly avoiding tendon damage). Luckily, Lily appears to be rather more inclined to self-preservation!
