A friend at the yard has offered me her horse to ride. She is absoloubtley lovely- nothing special but a nice genuine little lady with a bit of a spark in her occasionally.
Said friend barley comes down to see her and relys on another friend to take care of her, I have made it clear that i dont have time to take care of two horses so only do the occasional muck out if i have time.
Anyhow, this horse has been out of work for ages, friend keeps offering rides to people and horse gets fit then people fall off/ loose confidence/ dont ride anymore and horsey is left again.
Im riding her around 2/3 times a week but i feel so guilty because this little mare needs some more attention which i don't have the time to give, current owner has no confidence after coming off and seeing several people fall off her horse and so wont give it to the horse. Its so sad because she is just sooooo lovely.
Ive learned that she has had an offer from a local riding school (my old one) for the horse and she has refused because she doesn't want to loose her. This is so frustrating for me as an outsider because, i think Josie (the horse in question) would really like it there and the riding school owner takes good care of her horses and keeps them untill they die or only gives them to trusted clients when they come to retiring age. This would be such a good opportunity for this horse but the owner just cant see it (probably because she isnt there enough).
I tell you, if i had the time/ money i would snatch her up.:(
Sorry no real point to this just wanted to vent. :)

It's a shame when people hold on to the last bit of emotion and don't really see what is right for the horse. I've known people take years and years to decide to sell horses that just were not suited to them; and I understand why they don't, but when it means that the horse is not as happy as it could be it is such a shame.

Perhaps try talking to her again.

If she is not riding her, and the horse is doing nothing, then I cannot see the issue. Have you spoken to her about it...something along the lines that it would be a good opprotunity for both the horse and the owner, because it would give the owner a chance to look for something that suited her better as well.

well she says she doesnt want it to leave our yard, which is a 15 min drive from her home because she thinks the riding school is too far (20 mins from her home) i think im going to have to talk to her again as its so sad to see a horse that isnt loved- i know that sounds harsh but if you'd rather spend your time getting p****d and watching jezza kyle than spending time with your horse then surely you cannot love it? or is that just me?
Thanks for replies :) xx

Unless I'm missing something this horse is
- looked after by a friend of the owner and (occasionally) you
- ridden 2/3 times/week.

Well, so what?

Unless there is a welfare issue you haven't mentioned then, given horse (presumably) has equine company I don't think it will really mind too much.

I have various small fluffies, some of which I don't cuddle much because they live in happy family groups of their own kind and I don't think it would be time well-spent. They have their basic needs (and expensive veterinary ones...) taken care of and are checked several times/day. But, no, they don't all 'do' all they could with people.

If anyone suggested that I sell them (including by posting their names on a public forum) I'd be pretty upset.

As long as horse is cared for I don't see an issue with someone having a 'pet' they pay for but don;t 'use' very much.

I see your point, but this woman doesnt even pay the other woman or myself to take care of her horse, and doesnt let us know whether shes coming down so sometimes when i go down at 8/9 to check on mine i find that her horse hasnt been fed/ mucked out etc  my other problem is, that she's in debt to yard owner as she cannot really afford the horse and as i said never comes and sees her, i just don't see why you'd have a horse if you didn't take care of it or see it regularly its not like she has a job either- she sits at home or goes out with friends :( sorry it just doesn't make sense to me when i would give anything to ride my horse again or at least have time to spend hours messing about with her and clip her legs and do all the silly stuff and she just doesnt seem to give two flying farts. But thats just me. :)
