My horse jumped out of his field yesterday into the neibouring field and beat up the two horses in there. They are both OK but one is on Bute and is very stressed. My horse is kept in a field on his own because although he can be great with other hoses he also fights, and when he fights he dosn't stop. It's weird because he is so friendly and gentle you just wouldn't beleive it. Anyhow the YO has just rung me and asked me to relace ALL of the electric fencing with the taller stuff. The problem is I have NO money (and I REALLY mean NO MONEY!!) and the fence between the two IS ALREADY the taller fencing. The stuff she wants me to replace is between him and an adjacent empty field. Obiously I don't want any more injuries or fights but it dosnlt stop me being utterly pi**ed off!!!

Can you not suggest you go 50/50? You can pick up cheap electric fencing on Ebay etc.
Why do you need to replce the electric fencing if he jumped it? Or does she mean she wants you to buy the taller stakes?
Is there no other horse/pony that will graze with him and stick up for themselves?

She won't go 50/50 but I will look on e-bay. Apparently they've kept him in today so I need the fencing pretty quickly. Yes she wants me to buy the taller posts. And no nobody wants to turn their horse our with him!!

tbh, I would be relieved that I had not been served notice to quit by the YO. If your horse does cause any injuries from now on you and YO will be liable. Make sure your insurance is in place. BHS and WHW both include liability insurance as part of their memberships.

given the horse has chosen to jump a fence to attack others, the YO may be concerned it will use the lower fence into an empty field as another attack route.

can your horse be turned out at a different time to minimise the risk to others?

I had this problem with a friend's horse & sadly, we fell out over it. Her horse would also jump the electric fence & also tore down the post & rail to get to my pony mare who he had attacked twice previously.

I asked her to put an electric fence four feet infront of the post & rail, a bit like a stallion fence, which she did with the tall stakes, but didn't electrify it. He tried pulling the stakes out with his teeth, but didn't get through. I later discovered that she hadn't bought a fencer as she was intending to move him.

As a yard owner, I believe that the owner of the offending horse should pay for any modifications to the fencing that's necessary to contain it.
My fencing is strong enough for normal animals, & now that the horse has gone a single fence is all that is necessary between fields.

I think you are going to have to re-fence, or next time it could be a broken leg.

Yes point taken. It is really annoying though. He's been in this field configuration for nearly a year and never jumped into the other horses field. It's just annoying that he's chosen to do it. I already own all of the fencing anyway as the YO just leaves the fields to us. Unfortunatly It means I usually get the bum end of the deal even with him having to live in for 6 months. Just to put your mind at rest I am fully insured though.

Have to tried doubble fencing? By this I mean one row of fencing where needed then 3-4 foot gap or bigger if he's a good jumpper then put a second row. Just makes it look harder/bigger fot them to jump we had to do this with a youngster we had.

Good luck.

Hobble him. Or turn him out when the others get brought in. If you had access to anyone with an old stallion I'd say turn him out for ten rounds with that and keep your fingers crossed for no damage to yours.

I'd be livid if my own got in with each other, never mind anyone else's. They stop in their own paddocks or stop in til everyone else has left the field. I have had bad enough from kicks to legs and two of my good friends have had 'the very worst'

Are you being serious?

I can see where you are coming from on this actually. The horse I mentioned in my earlier post had become top dog after I lost my agressive gelding. He had always kept him in check & also defended the others. He would not have dared jump in with him.

I feel for you, my gelding can be aggressive to other horse when he is stressed. If I were you I would do as your YO asks, because not all will be as understanding as yours. I would try turning him out when the other horses come in. Horses do fight, don't beat yourself up about that but if he actually seriously hurts another horse you will be liable. Is he always like this or do you think there is a reason, as I said Cappy gets aggressive when he is stressed, so maybe there is an underlying reason?

Hope everything works out okay.

as a yard owner i think it is unreasonable to ask livery to pay for the fencing as this is a new escape not a repeated one! YO and land owners have a responsibility to fence in stock! if it was a weekly/daily occurance then a 50/50 split would seem fair! electric tape is cheap, tall stakes not overly expensive so if you have to buy them make sure YO knows they are yours! check the power going through fence as wind breaks the filaments and it shorts out (polyrope better for long life). on the good side at least he is scopey in his jump.YO has the liability if other livery horses are injured due to inadequate fencing! i would check your livery contract, should have a clause re damages, liabilities, services provided? (including secure turnout individual/group etc)
