Aaaargh - whining/howling greyhound AGAIN - Cala help pleaaase!

I moved house on Monday to a smaller place (got to save money in the current financial climate!) and have decided that Flick has to be crated when she is left.

In the old house she never got out of the habit of peeing on the floor whenever I left her, which I could just about cope with when I could shut her in the kitchen with a lino floor, but the new place has one downstairs room with the tiny kitchen through an archway, so I cant shut her in that area. To be honest the carpet is completely trashed in the downstairs room but I just dont want to be cleaning up dog pee every time I come home

But I have already been told by my new neighbours that she is howling whenever I leave her to go to work in the morning, as she is in the crate

I know that she didnt do this in the old house (I was so paranoid I videoed them!) as she wasnt in the crate

So now I dont know what to do.... leave her out of the crate to stop the noise and accept she will pee on the floor

Or perservere and risk the neighbours (understandably!) getting very fed up and complaining to the letting agency who will then insist I get rid of Flick

She did whine whenever I put her in the crate when I went to bed for the first few nights, but has finally stopped that now. I am clearing out the old house tonight so will get her Kong toy and DAP diffuser to try and improve things

and had thought about using it for the kitchen - sounds daft but I just thought that the kitchen area is so small

Flick is the first greyhound I have ever had who claims she cannot last more than 4-5 hours before she needs to go out? All my others have slept happily for 12 hours plus overnight and I have had to boot them out in the garden in the morning

Sorry to say this but do you think this is an acceptable life for a dog, to be shut in a crate all day, unable to move adequately, bored out of its brain, unable to go out for a wee. Why do you have dogs when you work all day and are not able to cater for them properly? I think to be fair to your dog you should arrange for someone to let her out at lunchtime, build a kennel in a securely fenced garden for her, or sign her over to a rescue organisation. It is not fair for her to be shut in a crate all day whilst you are at work. Would you like to be shut in the equivalent of a toilet all day long. Try sitting in the smallest room in your house tonight, without anyone to talk to or anything to occupy you and tell me tommorow how long you lasted for.
 
Ummmm.... I shall not rise to this rant.... where exactly did I say that I dont go home at lunchtime to let my dogs out? Do you seriously think that the rescue people would have re-homed six dogs so far to me if they felt I didnt care for them properly?

Yes, they ARE rescue dogs from Greyhound Rescue West of England - and I can give you references from that organisation if you would like them?

Where exactly did you say you do go home at lunchtime either? How is anyone meant to know, do I hazard a guess, or look at a crystal ball maybe? How am I meant to know they are rescued dogs, - don't tell me, look at my crystal ball again I suppose! If you go home at lunchtime to let them out then that is an entirely different matter. Maybe you should explain things better so people don't jump to incorrect conclusions. x
 
I think you will find most people who post in Dog Lounge are very familar with my situation, my dogs and what I do and dont do with them? For example Nailed felt no need to jump on me, and I can guarantee Cala wont either

Not at all sure if it would work, but you could try those puppy training pads... if she is going to pee anyway, she may as well pee somewhere you want. They trap the wee so it won't leak onto the carpet.

I had thought of one of those electric shock collars so every time she whines as I lie in bed I can zap 1,000 volts through her

Im currently searching ebay for a cattle prod to zap Piglet with eventime she tried to hump her daughter....poor Pumpkin hates it but is smaller so cant get away. Everytime i growl at her she ignores me and the minute i jump up she shoots off....bloody JRT's lol
Roll on 4 more week when they both get their bits out and *hopefully* Piglet will stop being so bloomin dominant (in a non aggressive way lol)

) I think you should get her a companion? Now that i mention it I have a lovley jack russell terrier.....

i think that you should also get the puppy pads. its always worth a try.
could you not leave a toy/chew in the same room with her to keep her occupied whilst you are out
 
When we first got Leah she had really bad separation anxiety (diahorrea all over the place, shredded the carpet/wallpaper/anything she could get hold of, and howled!). When we got her a crate she really loved it - I think she liked having her own space to curl away in - and the problems mostly stopped. But we also found that leaving on the radio or the TV helped, I suppose because she felt like she had some company and the house wasn't all quiet and scary. Even if it doesn't help, at least it'll drown her out so the neighbours don't hear her! (They'll just have to get used to the sound of the telly instead...)

And of course sympathies with the whining, mine got a little exited when I packed a bag before we went out a while after noon and they know that means it will be special (today we was "only" going out to the summer home for a few hours but they love it there) so there was a few whines and it just really is not my sort of music.
Oh and Jonna has one fault, though I blame it all on myself, I've never had any problems with teaching previous dogs to be alone at home, so I got lacy and didn't specifically train it that much when we got her and she can howl when I'm gone (and that is gone according to her). A very thin and fragile howl. It's actually quite beautiful (I have it on a tape recorder), if I didn't know that she feels lonely when she does it

So big sympathies with the howling too. Hopefully it is just a reaction on the fact that you've just moved.

I have got some SOOOOO sweet pics of her asleep which I took the other night, so as soon as I get broadband back at home (next Monday...) then I will upload them

just a thought - but how about totally covering the crate with a blanket, make it into a nice dark cave, also because it's dark and cosy she will probably feel safe and sleepy, add the radio and the DAP diffuser along with a huge bone and leaver her to her bliss.
