Lyla had the farrier yesterday morning - came out of stable quite lame NSF last night. Almost walking tip-toey, v sore turning :(

Farrier came back, took shoes off, hoof tested - no reaction - put shoes back on, still sore :confused: Farrier suggested she may have bruised sole ?? (He's not long qualified and is not her regular farrier who is on hols)

Turned her out last night, better on grass than hardstanding, see if she'd walk any stiffness off over night.

This morning still lame :(

Not a problem?? Got the saddle fitter coming tomo (after much bucking drama she's had near 4weeks off).

Do I cancel the saddle fitter today ? Sods law she'll be sound then tomo morning :eek:

Any other suggestions for sudden lameness after shoeing??

Def cancel the saddle fitting - not much point if you can'r ride in the saddle!
If the lameness came on straight after shoeing then it would be odd for it to be a bruised sole, though of course the brusied sole and also new shoes could coincidentally have happened at around the same time. I would have thought a nail prick would be more likely though. Did your farrier mention this possibility when he came out? I would expect him to be v careful with nail placement of the new shoe just incase. Worth hot tubbing the foot to help out an abcess too incase that has caused the sudden onset lameness. Any heat or digital pulse?
 
Thank You TP - Yes my first thought it was a tight nail - but then I would have thought as soon as the offending nail taken out it she would be sound straight away ?? Srory if I'm being thick!

The farrier said when he pared away the sole, it would have brought a bruise closer to the shoe ??

The feet are warm - but nothing out the ordinary. tbh havent checked pulse will do tonight ...

Have called and cancelled the saddle fitter - she was understanding!!!

Will try hot tubbing tonight and put kaoline poultice on and leave her in overnight ??
 
A nail prick might take a few days to become comfy again. Also depends if the farrier tried to get the nails close to the holes again, or if he was extra careful with their new placement. If he just tried to use the old ones then he may have just put the nail right back where it was!

Paring the sole could bring a bruise closer, I would wonder why he is taking so much sole off though if that could be likely. I would expect him to have noticed a miscoloured area of sole to indicate bruising too if he was cutting the sole away.

I would leave her in tonight if she is usually in, but if she is usually out then I would just ensure the poltice is secure with duck tape and turn her out anyway unless she is very sore.

If a couple of days of this treatment doesn't improve anything (or if an abcess doesn't show itself) then I would be on the phone to the farrier and thinking about getting him or the vet out to take a look.

I'll hot tub, poultice and turn out then!! I do feel they are better out moving around, and she's been out all summer (but has to start coming in at night the weekend - yard rules :()

Farrier said to call him later after I've seen her this evening... He's a nice young chap, but I'd prefer his boss (her regular farrier) to maybe have a look, think he's back from hols this week - if nothing has improved in a day or so.

We're going to have fun and games tonight then!! She's only a baby (well a v green 6yo) and my poulticing can be interesting :D

Wish me luck! I shall get eveything prepared ready and then slap it on quick as I can!!! :eek:
 
Best of luck then! One of ours can either be a lamb, or a silly old cow if we need to poltice her. Her best trick is 'oooh I'm going to fall down if you don't let go of my foot now'! Well I just hold on for dear life, she dips a little and then stands like a brick - silly girl! Hope your's stands like a sensible pone!
 
Thats my worry - she likes to pretend she can't possibly stand on 3 three legs and threatens to fall over! :rolleyes:
