AAAARRRRRHHHHH another ripped rug!!

My pony Troy keeps bitting my other pony Lukka's rug and ripping them! Last year was his 1st winter with me and i went through 4 rugs and endless hours of sewing up rips!! When it gets near feeding time Troy gets a bit grumpy and Lukka just does not respect his personal space and gets in his way so Troy turns round and bits him.
Troy has settled alot through the summer and I was hoping I would'nt have the same prob this winter but NO Lukka had new lightweight rug last weekend, go down this morning and it ripped!!!

Has anyone else had this problem or anyone know how I can stop it??

Sorry to go on just really peed off, if he just got out his way when he put his ears back at him then he wouldn't get bitten stupid pony!
 
I sympathise as this used to happen to my two boys if I left them in together. The only way to stop it is to seperate them. Can you do this? I know it's a pain but you have to weigh up the cost of repairing or replacing your rugs. Lightweight rugs are not very robust at the best of times!
 
I can sperate them, don't really want to but if it comes to it i will!! I have just sprayed some smelly TCP on the rug so im hoping this might keep him away fingercrossed!! Nice to know im not the only 1!

NAF make a sprayable cribstop product, can't remember what it is called but it stopped my friend's horse having his rugs destoyed by a fieldmate if she sprayed his rugs every few days; does make them a bit sticky though but worth it!
 
I totally sympathise with you. I was once in tears through this, sad I know but if a rug lasted me 2 weeks Id done well and I just got to the end of my tether when the owner of the rug ripper just laughed and said horses will be horses. Of course she was right but I couldnt afford to keep replacing rugs.
I tried all the anti bite potions, even mixed mustard with water and sprayed that on my rugs which worked better than the bought ones but I finally cured it by buying Rambo rugs. It broke my heart to pay so much for a rug to be destroyed but they stood up to everything, even rug ripping horse trying to pick my horse up by his rug etc etc. I bought a LW, MW and HW rambo and that was about 6 yrs ago, they are still going strong. The games got that rough my horse ended up with a fractured leg so now he is in his own part of the same field so I have no more rug or injury problems. Not ideal I know but hes alive.
 
its not sad believe me ive been close to tears too. thank u will bear the rambos in mind if tcp doesn't work nice to no there is a rug 'tried n tested'! aww your poor horse glad hes ok now and your rugs!
 
I'v been in this situation too, I'v got 2 dominant geldings which were both cut late and can't keepthem together as they just wind each other up and neither back down. I put some electric fencing up, the taller ones and they were still getting each others rugs and biting chunks out of each other so have now double fenced it and touch wood have sorted it!

The only trouble I now have is one of them gets bored out in the field after a while and begins to shred his rugs at the chest!! I have to make sure he's got plenty to nibble on and isn't waiting to come in for long! Therefore I HAVE to get to they yard for 3pm at the latest unless I want to buy a new rug as they're normally torn beyond repair!!

Horses, don't you just love them!!!
