I've waited many many years but today I finally become a horse owner & I'm so excited I could burst!

I haven't had a horse for 10+ yrs (that was only a share) so I'm rusty I accept, but today I'm back as a complete novice in fact worse than? My brain is blank, I don't know anything it seems.

He's been making faces at me as I've sat gently babbling on for 3 hrs. We've had a wee brush but I've left him now to rest.

Any advice on early stages more than welcome. He's in for tonight but I hope to put him in his field tomorrow for the day & see what he makes of his neighbours (sheep):eek:
 
Bless you! It'll all come back to you, so long as you're feeding and watering he'll live until you find your feet! Do you have support around you? xxx

My advice would be not to feed him too much, a hot horse you don't know yet isn't much fun. Also, establish the fact that you're boss before you start the endless cuddling :) Once he knows who to respect, the cuddling, grooming, and talking to him will be much more fun (and riding of course!)

Brilliant news :D There's no other feeling like it.
My advice is to be patient, you are new to him, the place is new to him and he will need time to settle. don't be in too much of a hurry you have years ahead of you so just get to know each other and build up the trust. I hope you have lot's of fun together.

Pics are necessary and his name obviously.
 
*winces* ooo my post sounded horrible! It wasn't meant to sound as though I rule my horses with a rod of iron and starve them!
I agree with the above, take your time with him, it will all come back!

oh congratualtions!!!!!!!!!!!!!! when i got my first horse last year i felt jus tlike you!!!!!!!!!!!
to begin with i gave him lots of loveley gentle grooms - found his sweet spot and really worked it lol
i also placed a bale of straw in his stable as my chair and sat for hours reading a book aloud - lol, mad i know - but i wanted him to know my voice. whenever he wondered over ot me he got a nice scratch - i used to pop in as often as i could - freindship takes a long tiome ot develop - enjoy this time - get to know each other and just give lots and lots of love xxxx

Advice. Hm.

Ask questions! Always, always ask questions :). Be sure that you're comfortable that the person/people you ask know what they are talking about :D

Grow a thick skin, to cope with those that always know better lol.

Learn to condition score Your horse :D

Weightape regularly, and keep and eye on his general fitness, etc.

Learn his resting and work pulse rates.

And his temperature.

Find the pulse (name has just gone out of my head lol), so you can check for laminitis.

Become best friends with your vet, farrier, back person, physio, muscle lady, feed merchant, and saddler :D

Ring a number of feed merchants and find out what, if anything, you should be feeding your gorgeous lad.

Try not to spend an inordinate amount of money on rugs lol

And most importantly, enjoy! :D :D :D
 
First of all good luck! I got a new horse just 3 months ago and made some early mistakes which I should warn you about. First of all, too much too soon. I tried to keep his routine exactly as before and only gave him about a week before I rode him, and then hacked out on my own so kept tearing him away from the new place that he'sd only just arrived at. The result was a very tense, frightened horse made worse by my own rising adrenaline having not owned horses for a long time! In summary, take your time and enjoy getting used to him before you do too much. He needs to settle in and the longer and better quality these early days are the better the base for a successful partnership!! NB we are getting there...but only with time and a very good trainer!! xx
