Hiya,

My normal name on here is stez1234.

After a fab few months with Holly and some really big steps forward we now have a new issue!!

She has over the last 2 weeks started barking. It started off as just the odd one at odd things like the book case or the bin!!

It's now starting to get more often and she is now doing it during the day while I am at work. My neighbour has said he has heard her a couple of times.

I have no idea where it has come from as nothing in our routine has changed to unsettle her. She has also started biting my kitchen chairs!

She had plenty to keep her occupied during the day and I often come home to half emptied kongs cause she spent the day sleeping!!

What is the best way to stop this before it becomes a big issue with the neighbours and what could be making her do this???

Thanks

When she started barking @ the Bookcase & Bin was it because there was something on the bookcase or in the bin she wanted? I ask because Ozzie's Stagbar gets put on the bookcase, and most evenings after supper he barks at the bookcase for his stagbar (so he can have a chew)!

Now I'm bad in that this barking is rewarded in that I get up and give him the stagbar. He also barks at the backdoor when he wants to go out.

He went through a stag of barking at the treat tin too, but as he was either called away or ignored this has stopped. So I would suggest making sure there isn't food in the bin or anything on the bookshelf for her that she will want, and then either calling her away or ignoring the barking so it isn't rewarded.

Also make sure she has a decent walk (perhaps including some obedience/brain work) before she is left home alone, so hopefully she will be to tired to get up to mischief!

it may be a good idea to leave a radio on quietly while you are out so its not complete silence and any outside noise will not be so noticable. sorry cant think of anything else apart from long walks....

Thanks for the replies.

I already leave the radio on for her and she has about 2-3 hours exercise a day depending on how my knee is feeling.

She kinda looks like she is barking at something! She has been barking at the kitchen wall tonight!! I had thought it was cause the heating is now on and she can hear the water coming down the pipes but she does it when it's not on as well.

Who knows what she is barking at! It could be anything. I don't think she is quite right in the head as she is also scared of the microwave!!

OH DEAR, im no help then........is it worth getting her checked over by the vet, she may have something like an ear infection that makes her feel odd? i also heard that when there were a problems with barking dogs, they trained them to bark on cue and then gave a command to stop, so the barking was controlled by the owner, cant remember which trainer it was though. might be worth further investigation...

Haha!:D Max is scared of the dishwasher:eek: - who knows what goes through their tiny brains!:) Of course it maybe that the ping of the microwave is really loud for her:o

No ideas on the barking when you are out though................:o

Put the chairs out of reach (stack them on table etc)

Have you only the one neighbour or is there another who may have a pet or something new in the house or a child or people rowing, that she might be hearing or otherwise aware of?

As PS, my fella will bark when he wants something, quite cheeky behaviour that I don't really allow :p much :p did you ever put some food in the bin or put a ball or toy up on the bookcase??

Dex found his voice about 4 months after i had him. Barks for attention, barks for his stuff that has dropped out of reach, bark behind baby gate if I go upstairs- but just a few. I ignore him totally.

If it is odd stuff what about something paranormal? A haunting perhaps? Animals are more sensitive to these things than us mere mortals......or mice potentially :)

I don't think it's mice or rats as the cats are not bothered!! It did cross my mind about paranormal stuff as a couple of weird things have happened but it could just be my mind playing tricks on me.

She doesn't bark once I have gone to bed which would be the time mice and rats would be most active. It's more in the evening and during the day!!
