So, today was his first try at jumping. Bless him, he tried sooooooo hard but couldnt get the whole 3,2,1 jump unless you actually shouted 'Jump!' at him! He kept chipping in a tiny one and then when I got him to jump properly, he would have a teeny buck after as if to "I know Mum, I'm just trying to work it out". He was such a little star and wouldn't touch the fence and was really using himself. I'm so proud!! And then...

Mummy says "jump', he get flustered, knocks fence, fence wing comes over and crashes behind him. He bucks, then panics and broncs. I fall off only my foot jams in the stirrup (bent leg safety stirrup? I think not...). I now have a swollen calf where he panicked and jumped on me and a puncture wound in my arm but god knows where that came from. He then (get this for an ex-racer) trotted off, then stopped, then came back!!

So, whilst I came off and am now horribly sore with a suspiciously swollen leg, I am so proud of my boy. He went from never going over a pole to jumping over about 75cm happily! Such a little star and he really enjoyed it! Not bad for a 5 yo who has been of the track 9 months. I am so proud (can you tell??!!) and possibly a teeny tiny bit smug.

Now all we have to do is work on his rubbish rider. Trust me, we did not look pretty... Now off for a bath with a big smile. Sorry all, just had to share as am soooo happy :D:D:D:D:D:D:D

Aww, bless him :) Al has a new girl at the same-ish stage as him (off the track 9 months now, 5 years old, been in work for about 4 months) and watching them progress is so satisfying.

Think he came back as he was a bit confused as to what happened! In true PC fashion I got back on and jumped him back over and he was so honest and eyed up the jump but still went. So amazingly chuffed with him.

Leg however is now really bl@@dy sore and I can't stand on it. Mashed up muscles methinks. OH currently trying to get me to A&E. I have far better things to do than wait in the for 3 hours only to be told its just bad bruising

Bless. At least he cares!!

I love the way everyone is congratulating you after a nasty fall! We must all be a bit mad....

Is there a thread for talking about our ex racer project ponies? Mine is a week into work now and I would love to read about other people's and just generally chat about them. If not, I might start one!

We could start a whole forum on the joys and pitfalls of ex-racer ownership!
Mine hurdled too so does at least have a vague idea of jumping - probably more so than me, but she tries really hard to please just like yours. I love their honesty

Yay! I love ex-racer posts! I have a 5yo ex racer who finished racing 9 months ago too such a quick learner and by far the best horse I've ever owned :)

Just had a trip to A&E and have had stitches in my arm - its a good inch deep  and have nicked the tendon. Both leg and arm are in heavy duty wrappings :(.

Am fine though and will be back on board in a few days.

Am still a very proud Mum though - us ex-racer types are odd arent we?! I agree that a thread would be fab. It would be nice to have somewhere to get lots of support and advice from people in the same boat. And I agree with an earlier post - this is my second ex-racer and I love them. So brave and willing! Love 'em :o

PS. Not liking the Oromorph - I'm a bit trippy atm!!!
