I am going out of my mind now an need help. Long story short, have a 2 year old shire gelding, who for all sorts of reasons i am having to change his diet which has gone really well until i have tied to cut out the Alfalfa. I have researched alternatives as much as i can but am still stuck. I initially changed it to D&H Just grass but he's really not liking that and loast weight, so i changed to kwikbeet, although he didn't seem that keen he was eating it, until this morning that is. What can i feed as a chaff alternative or a chaff without alfalfa and mollasses that will be high enough in calories. Also due to the size of him i don't want something i am going to have to feed loads of, he takes ages to eat! The rest of his diet is Adlib hay, seaweed, rosehips, linsead and brewers yeast. Please Help, i ust want him to be happy healthy and keep a healthy weight!

you could try Topchop, from Topspec. Sorry, not used it myself so not sure if it would do what you want, it's just the only one I know of! Or hifi? I use spillers conditioning fibre which is brilliant if they drop weight easily but it is ever so slightly molassed (although not at much as Alfa).

Otherwise, the only other thing I can think of is readigrass, but again, no personal experience of this. I'd suggest ringing up all the nutritionists from all the different feed manufacturers and explaining your situation to them - I did this (you can get the numbers off their websites) and all were brilliant - even if I didn't end up using their products, they're really good at highlighting which components you need more/less of in a feed so if you need to you can then research which feeds have what you need in them,

Cant you just feed him hifi and carrots so he gets all the gumph you give him and ad lib good quality hay?

If you want him show quality why not some Allen and Page calm and condition?

A&P fast fibre!!

email A&P and they give you LOADS of advice & send you samples & i got a voucher off their food too

Coolstance Coprameal is a good diet for maintaining weight, in youngsters you may need to feed additional calcium which of course could come from alfalfa. if you are having to cut out alfalfa you would need to add the calcium in powder form.

You don't need much of it to provide the required nutirition and can then offer Readigrass seperately as additional fodder, although hay might be enough

having looked into similar myself there don't seem to be any. HiFi, TopChop, and Spillers Conditioning Fibre all contain AlfaA.

If you want to feed fibre as opposed to forage then the A&P FastFibre might well be a good bet, or something like the A&P Ride and Relax which is 25% fibre and would both make good chaff alternatives
