(apologies now for 'going on' a little but this made me so upset and angry)

Did anyone watch the documantary last night on these poor children who suffer a miserable existence in bulgaria social care homes.

I have watched it twice now and it is beyond belief how these children are 'cared for'. It would be fair to say that our horses and pets are significantly better looked after physically, mentally and emotionally.

the documantary focused on one particular home, which was reported on over a period of several months.

It highlighted the welfare and deterioration of children who, some had learning difficulties and some were blind.
All the children suffered from malnutrition and were slowly starving to death.

Thier limbs were malformed due to being kept in the same position in cots, (some of the children were 13-18years and still in cots). Eventually they became 'bed ridden'.

Many did not speak due to a severe lack of interaction and others who could sit in a chair, spent their day rocking to and fro due to having no mental stimulation whatsoever.

One poor girl had a broken leg and the staff were oblivious. This girl was able to speak and tried to tell them but they just didnt listen. On a last visit by the reporter she had finally become bed ridden but she muttered very weakly to the reporter,
'pram....outside'. A patheitic last plea to get away!

I doubt she is alive now.

How can this still be going on?
The country should be ashamed.

It is horrific, but sadly the people who work at these places blatantly do not care one jot for these kids and seem to see them as an inconvenience.
Makes my stomach turn to be honest

It broke my heart..... totally.

The clip at the end with the little boy cuddling the reporter will stay with me. Terrible.

The director should be made to eat her words...how dare she say she would like to stay there herself. Shocking.

aw i upset me soooo much, it really frustrated me that when the children were upset they weren't even sllowed a cuddle. and how they carried the bed ridden children was appauling

yes i watched it last nite,i couldn't believe it either !

but its the same as the romanian children and its really sad but it happens, theres not much we can do to help and the home last nite wouldn't let the aid workers in !

My cousin was adopted from a Bulgarian orphanage. Apparently kept in absolutely horrendous conditions. He was v.clingy for the first while as he thought he was going to be sent back. He was 3/4 when he got to leave and move with my aunt and uncle. Had been in the orphanage since he was a wee baby.

Glad I didn't see the programme as your description is bad enough, of course we need these sort of people emmigrating here to work in our hospitals and old folks homes, well according to labour we do.

I watched it last night as well....I cried for most of it....poor little things. I work with people with learning disabilities, so it was all the more poignant for me.

With just a little bit of interaction and affection, their lives would have been so much better. I know it's a horrible thing to say, but I thought that they would have been better off dead......my heart was breaking watching it.

I actually did say to my OH that my horse is treated a million times better than those poor children........it was truly appaling.

The ones that stuck in my mind were the little blind boy, who was 11 (I think) and was the size of a 3 or 4 year old, and DeeDee, who was only mildly autistic and very bright (reading and writing), but who was sitting and rocking back and forth in the space of 6 months in that hell-hole....and all the time she was convinced that her mother was coming back for her......

Couldn't agree more MR.

That clip, plus the one where they were obliviously dressing that child who was crying from the pain of a broken leg, really haunt me.

I can't ever recall being so upset by a documentary in my life

I agree completely.

My daughter has mild autism (aspergers) so i understand where you are coming from. It must be emotionally difficult for DeeDee as she has an awareness of what is going on and has her home life to compare to.

You can just see on their faces that they have given up hope.

I agree, it had me in tears, and furious that a member of the EU could allow it to go on.

That was the most shocking documentary I've seen in years.

Did you notice that nearly all the staff were obese? Feeding the children on slops/gruel, 10 mouthfuls per child shovelled in at high speed, but they weren't starving themselves were they?

I was sickened, horrified, disgusted.
