There is going to be more of it i realy do fear. We get calls daily as no charities near us are takeing any in. If i had the land and funds it would be different. People are paying stupid livery when i know there are many cheaper options.
I dread answering the phone now.
the sooner all animals are micro chipped and people licensed or at least register to keep them the better. the poor creature how could they? one of the sickies could have at least clled someone anonymously
What a lovely looking chap. Thank God he was discovered before yesterday's dreadful weather. I hate to think of him trapped out in that. Fingers crossed he makes it. I was at Greatwood the other day for their Friends Day, and Helen Yeadon was voicing her concern that with economy in this country promising to get worse it could well have a serious effect on her ability to rehome horses, thereby freeing up space for more urgent cases, as people might not be able to afford it any more. Also looking at Tattersalls July Sales lists there are huge numbers not selling, far more than usual, I think.
The sad thing is no one will probably find out who did this. This poor animal is just another one who has suffered in the hands of a cruel and thoughtless owner. I hope it pulls through and I think if any one recognises this horse then they should call the authorities anonymously and report this person.
Just think how many other horses/ animals suffer and are never found. I can't imagine the torture, pain and fear that they go through, also any one who can ill treat an animal must be sick in the head and should be locked up or even GASSED. A bit over the top some might say but it makes me very angry as poor animals deserve better they are not brought into this world to be abused, they can't speak and tell us what's happened to them, they trust us give us lots of joy and pleasure. They have as much right as any human animals don't abuse or abandon us. DO THEY
Here here, but as usual when they do catch them they get a find and band from keeping them. What kind of punishment is that. They need to be tougher on people like that so it scares the sh** out of them and they would think twice before doing it again or at all.
And so it goes. Tethering is no way to keep any horse chained up, and the injuries they suffer are horrific and often they are so badly injured they have to put down. Luckily for this little chap he was found in time. I just hope they catch whoever did this, pity they won't be tied to a tree and left. They definitely need to make the punishment fit the crime, not 20 hours community service. Petition on 10 Downing Street website to ban tethering, the sooner this is banned the better. www.petitions.pm.gov.uk/tethering/
Lets get these animals unchained and let them live a free life.
How very very sad. The worse thing is he will not be the last as money gets tighter. Lets hope he pulls through. Lets also hope than the case is publicised as someone must recognise him.
toffeesmarty, I very much doubt this has anything to do with the credit crunch, desperate owners unable to feed or sell their horses, or anything as innocent. This is only one of 5 horses in the local area to be found tethered and effectively abandoned in the area in the last month.
They have all been rescued at varying degrees of injury, dehydration and neglect and none have been claimed (although I know who owns at least three of them) Proving who left them in that state is the crux of the matter, and is really impossible to do.
At least they are all in safe homes now, and have a chance of maturing into nice horses, given time
What I dont understand is if they really dont want them then why not just set them loose!! At least someone would find them or are you saying that this is deliberate act/s at wanting to starve a horse to death by its owner? (confused)
This seems to me to be not the action of somebody affected by the "credit crunch", but that of a vengeful individual who has stolen a colt (why wouldn't it normally have been gelded?), who is hell bent on revenge for something or other.
It has happened before and it will happen again. It's got nothing to do with the credit crunch IMHO.

i'm sorry, but your reply doesn't really make any sense whatsoever...
its really horrible i think it someone that has gone out and brought a horse and can not afford veternary treatment
it pi**es me when people go out buy a horse that knows they cannot afford one or no anything about horses that the horse or pony are the ones that end up suffering
WHY in the hell was it there for two wks near a motorway and wasnt delt with sooner ?

I don't think there is any RIGHT way to abandon a horse, apart from alerting the correct authorities and handing it over that way.

Sadly it is not that easy. We take the ones no other charity will. There is limited spaces with charities. I know around here there is no-where takeing in.
I once rang every charity in England, Ireland, Scotlaand and wales.
Although some charities are extremely wealthy they still have a set amount of space and places.
One field officer came to introduce himself when we opened and gave me advice. They keep horses for 3 years. If not re-homed in this time they are pts. I found it upsetting at the time but how else can places be found? Horses live long lives and need a lot of space.
Its not something i could do but we are a tiny charity and did not open as a rest home but our main work is helping owners in need and education.
We are close to a major charity and we get a lot of their work and people desperate to find a home for their horse as the major charity is full.
It breaks my heart sometimes when i have terrified owners on the phone - terrified because they have no-one else to turn to and there is only one answer other than letting the horse loose somewhere, abandoning it or it starveing to death.
If charities say no what can people do?
I am in no way at all saying they should abandon a horse. I do think it needs makeing public how full charities are so people open their eyes and take off their rose tinted glasses- i wore them once - until reality hit and Florin was shot because no-one could help.
The horse world needs a shake up, for the sake of the horses.
ischa, it was tethered in a field out of sight, it was only when a lorry driver happened to wonder up the embankment that it was seen.
As for who it belongs to, or how they came by it - there is a community that believes they are entitled to keep horses, as their families have before them who live outside the law and normal controls and standards and who breed fairly indiscriminately.
This mare will have cost them nothing, will certainly never have seen a vet, not passported, will have had a hard life so far either trotting or breeding - given half a chance I would cheerfully tether the owners to a tree and leave them there.
Excuse my ignorance then, perhaps a free knackerman should be provided for the horses to be humanely destroyed. Somewhere where people can go, hand over their horses without fear of retribution or judgement and hand the horse over to be humanely destroyed.
Sadly until such a service is provided, or at least a similar service, people will carry on abandoning their animals.
i see know
but that still dont give them a excuse to abandon animals when injurys have been substained like that maybe there should be a place where you can take your horse and have it distroyed least it would suffer
it so horrible to think someone could put such a lovely beast through that i be quite willing to teether them and tie it so short they strangle them selfs
