they didn't know before, they went straight out as soon as they received the first call. The age of the injuries and how long the horse has been there is being estimated by it's overall health (and it really was at death's door) and the extent of the maggot infestation in the wounds. It may not make a full recovery yet.

Why a free knackerman? The meat man pays for horses!. God knows why people have to let thier animals get to that stage instead of cashing them in when they are healthy. Credit crunch or not there is no excuse for cruelty. I have had to sell horses due to lack of finance, and if I couldn't find a good home for one I would rather send it to the meat man than let it starve.
The farce that is the passport system should and could have been a golden opportunity to make all horses traceable and owners accountable for their actions. As expected though it serves no purpose what so ever other than to fleece more money from horse lovers and generate lots of worthless paperwork for genuine dealers and producers to put up with. Those people who cannot be bothered with the paperwork are the same ones that cannot be bothered to look after their animals and STILL get away with it time and again.
 
So relieved the poor horse was found. The suffering if not found would have been beyond words, and it is bad enough as it is. Don't you absolutely hate our fellow mankind sometimes? I'd like to do the same to the people who left this horse to suffer like that.
